- 7But that's not what he intends, nor does he think that way; his true aim is to destroy and cut off many nations.
- 8He boasts, 'Aren't all my commanders as powerful as kings?
- 9Didn't Calno fall just like Carchemish? Wasn't Hamath conquered like Arpad? Wasn't Samaria taken down like Damascus?

- 11Won't I do to Jerusalem and her idols exactly what I did to Samaria and hers?'"
- 12Therefore, when the Lord has completed all his work on Mount Zion and Jerusalem, I will punish the proud heart of the king of Assyria and the glory of his haughty looks.
- 13Because the Assyrian king has said, "I did all this by my own strength and wisdom, because I'm so clever. I've redrawn the borders of nations, plundered their treasures, and brought down their rulers like a mighty warrior.
- 14My hand reached into the wealth of nations like reaching into a bird's nest. Like someone gathering abandoned eggs, I gathered the whole earth — and no one flapped a wing, opened a mouth, or made a sound."
- 15But can an ax brag about being mightier than the one who swings it? Can a saw claim to be greater than the person using it? That would be like a stick swinging the hand that lifts it, or a wooden staff picking up the person who carries it!
- 16Therefore the Lord, the Lord of hosts, will send leanness among his fat ones; and under his glory he will kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.
- 17The Light of Israel will become a fire, and his Holy One will become a flame. In a single day it will burn up Assyria's thorns and briers.
- 18It will consume the glory of his forests and fertile fields, both soul and body, and they will be like when a standard-bearer faints.
- 19So few trees will be left in his forest that a child could count them.
- 20When that day comes, the survivors of Israel — those who escaped from the house of Jacob — will never again depend on the nation that beat them down. Instead, they will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
- 21A remnant will come back — a remnant of Jacob — to the mighty God.
- 22For though your people Israel are as the sand of the sea, a remnant of them will return; the destruction decreed will overflow with righteousness.
- 23For the Lord GOD of Armies has determined to bring complete destruction across the whole land.
- 24So this is what the Lord GOD of Armies says: "My people who live in Zion, don't be afraid of the Assyrians when they beat you with a rod and raise their staff against you the way Egypt once did.
- 25In just a little while, my fury against you will be over, and my anger will turn to destroy them instead."
- 26The LORD of Armies will raise a whip against Assyria, just as he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb. He will stretch out his rod over the sea and lift it up, just as he did against Egypt.
- 27On that day, the burden will be lifted from your shoulders, and the yoke will be removed from your neck. The yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing.
- 28The invader has arrived at Aiath! He has marched through Migron! He has stored his supplies at Michmash!
