  1. 1The burden concerning the Valley of Vision: What's wrong with you that everyone has climbed up onto the rooftops?
  2. 2You noisy city, full of commotion, a joyous city — your slain men weren't killed by the sword, nor did they die in battle.
  3. 3All your leaders ran away together but were captured by the archers. Everyone found was rounded up, even those who had fled from far away.
  4. 4So I said, "Look away from me — let me cry without holding back. Don't try to comfort me over the destruction of my people."
  5. 5For it is a day of trouble, and of trampling, and of confusion by the Lord GOD of hosts in the valley of vision, breaking down the walls, and of crying to the mountains.

  7. 7And it will happen that your finest valleys will be filled with chariots, and horsemen will take their positions at the gate.

  9. 9You saw how many gaps had opened in the walls of the City of David, and you collected water from the lower pool.
  10. 10You counted the houses of Jerusalem and tore some of them down to use the stones to reinforce the wall.
  11. 11You built a reservoir between the two walls for the water from the old pool, but you did not look to its maker or have regard for the one who fashioned it long ago.

  13. 13But instead — look! — there was joy and celebration, slaughtering cattle and sheep, feasting on meat and gulping down wine. "Let's eat and drink," you said, "because tomorrow we die!"
  14. 14And it was revealed in my ears by the LORD of hosts, "Surely this iniquity will not be purged from you until you die," says the Lord GOD of hosts.
  15. 15Thus says the Lord GOD of hosts, 'Go to this treasurer, to Shebna, who is over the house, and say to him:
  16. 16What do you have here, and whom do you have here, that you have carved out a tomb for yourself here—like one who cuts out his tomb on high and carves out a dwelling for himself in the rock?
  17. 17Look, the LORD will carry you away with a mighty captivity, and will surely cover you.
  18. 18He will surely turn and toss you like a ball into a large country. There you will die, and there the chariots of your glory will be the shame of your lord's house.
  19. 19I will drive you from your post, and from your position he will pull you down.
  20. 20"When that day comes, I will summon my servant Eliakim son of Hilkiah.
  21. 21I will dress him in your robe and fasten your sash around him. I will hand your authority over to him, and he will be like a father to the people of Jerusalem and the house of Judah.
  22. 22I will place the key of the house of David on his shoulder. When he opens a door, no one will shut it; when he shuts it, no one will open it.
  23. 23I will secure him like a nail in a firm place, and he will be a glorious throne for his father's house.
  24. 24They will hang on him all the glory of his father's house, the offspring and the descendants, all vessels of small quantity, from the cups to all the flagons.
  25. 25"In that day," declares the LORD of hosts, "the nail that is fastened in the secure place will be removed, cut down, and fall; and the burden that was upon it will be cut off." The LORD has spoken.
