- 1Pay attention — the Lord, the LORD of Armies, is about to strip Jerusalem and Judah of everything they depend on: their entire supply of food and their entire supply of water.
- 2He will remove their warriors and soldiers, their judges and prophets, their wisest advisors and their elders,
- 3their military commanders and their most respected citizens, their counselors, their skilled craftsmen, and their persuasive speakers.
- 4"I will give them boys as their leaders, and children will rule over them."
- 5The people will turn on each other — everyone oppressing their neighbor. The young will disrespect the old, and the worthless will mock the honorable.
- 6A man will grab his own brother in their father's house and say, "You still have a coat on your back — you be our leader! Take charge of this mess!"
- 7On that day, he will swear, saying, 'I will not be a healer; my house doesn't have bread or clothing. Don't make me a ruler of the people.'
- 8For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah has fallen, because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.
- 9The look on their faces gives them away. They parade their sin openly like Sodom and don't even try to hide it. How terrible for their soul! They have brought disaster on themselves.
- 10Tell the righteous that things will go well for them, because they will enjoy the fruit of what they've done.
- 11But how terrible for the wicked! Disaster is coming for them, because they will be paid back for what their own hands have done.
- 12My people, children oppress you, and women rule over you. My people, your leaders mislead you and ruin your paths.
- 13The LORD rises to present His case and stands to judge the people.
- 14The LORD brings charges against the elders and leaders of his people: "You are the ones who have devoured the vineyard. The goods you stole from the poor are sitting in your houses."
- 15What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor? says the Lord GOD of hosts.
- 16The LORD also said, "The women of Zion are arrogant — they strut around with their noses in the air, flirting with their eyes, taking dainty little steps, and jingling the ornaments on their ankles."
- 17Therefore the Lord will strike with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will expose their secret parts.
- 18When that day comes, the Lord will take away all their finery — their ankle ornaments, their headbands, their crescent necklaces,
- 19their earrings, their bracelets, and their veils,
- 20their headdresses, their ankle chains, their sashes, their perfume bottles, and their charms,
- 21their signet rings and their nose rings,
- 22their fine robes, their capes, their cloaks, and their purses,
- 23their mirrors, their linen garments, their tiaras, and their shawls.
- 24Instead of perfume, there will be a stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of styled hair, baldness; instead of fine robes, sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.
- 25Your men will die by the sword, and your warriors will fall in battle.
- 26Her gates will lament and mourn; and she, being desolate, will sit on the ground.
