  1. 1Disaster is coming for those who run to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they have so many, and in cavalry because they are so powerful — yet never look to the Holy One of Israel or seek the LORD!
  2. 2But God is wise too, and he will bring disaster. He doesn't take back his words. He will rise up against the household of evildoers and against the allies of those who practice sin.
  3. 3The Egyptians are only human—they are not God. Their horses are flesh and blood—they are not spirit. When the LORD stretches out his hand, the helper will stumble and the one being helped will fall, and they will all fail together.
  4. 4This is what the LORD said to me: "Like a lion or young lion roaring over its prey, it is not afraid when many shepherds are called against it, nor does it back down because of their noise. In the same way, the LORD of hosts will come down to fight for Mount Zion and its hill."
  5. 5Like birds flying, the LORD of hosts will defend Jerusalem; he will defend and deliver it; he will pass over and preserve it.
  6. 6Return to him from whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted.
  7. 7When that day comes, every one of you will throw away the silver idols and gold idols that your own hands have made for you as a sin.
  8. 8Then the Assyrian will fall by a sword not of a mighty man, and a sword not of a common man will devour him. But he will flee from the sword, and his young men will be put to flight.
  9. 9He will cross over to his stronghold in fear, and his princes will be afraid of the banner, says the LORD, whose fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.
