- 1Look — a king will reign with righteousness, and rulers will govern with justice.
- 2And a man will be like a shelter from the wind, a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in a desert, like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.
- 3The eyes of those who see will not be dim, and the ears of those who hear will listen.
- 4The heart of the rash will understand knowledge, and the tongue of those who stammer will be ready to speak plainly.
- 5The vile person will no longer be called noble, nor the miser said to be generous.
- 6For the vile person will speak villainy, and his heart will work iniquity, to practice hypocrisy, and to speak error against the LORD, to empty the hungry person, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.
- 7The scoundrel's tools are also evil. He devises wicked plans to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy person speaks what is right.
- 8But a noble person makes noble plans, and he stands firm on what is noble.
- 9Stand up, you women living in comfort! Listen to what I have to say! You carefree daughters, pay attention to my words!
- 10For many days and years, you careless women will be troubled, because the grape harvest will fail and there will be no gathering.
- 11Tremble, you women who are at ease; shudder, you carefree ones! Strip off your clothes, bare yourselves, and wrap sackcloth around your waists.
- 12They will mourn for the breasts, the pleasant fields, and the fruitful vine.
- 13Thorns and briers will overrun the land of my people — yes, even the joyful homes in the celebrating city.
- 14Because the palaces will be abandoned; the multitude of the city will be left; the forts and towers will be for dens forever, a joy of wild donkeys, a pasture of flocks.
- 15This will last until the Spirit is poured out on us from on high. Then the wilderness will become a fertile field, and the fertile field will seem like a forest.
- 16Justice will settle in the wilderness, and righteousness will dwell in the fertile field.
- 17And the work of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness will be lasting quietness and assurance.
- 18My people will live in peaceful homes, in safe dwellings, in undisturbed places of rest.
- 19When hail comes down on the forest, the city will be brought low.
- 20How blessed you will be — sowing your seeds beside every stream, letting your oxen and donkeys graze freely.
