  1. 1Come close, all you nations, and listen! Pay attention, every people on earth. Let the earth hear this, and everything in it — the whole world and all that it produces.
  2. 2The LORD is furious with every nation and enraged at all their armies. He has marked them for total destruction and handed them over to slaughter.
  3. 3Their dead bodies will be thrown out, and the stench will rise from their corpses. The mountains will be melted with their blood.
  4. 4Every star in the heavens will dissolve, and the sky will be rolled up like a scroll. All the stars will wither and fall like leaves dropping from a vine, like shriveled figs falling from a fig tree.
  5. 5For my sword will be bathed in heaven. Look, it will come down on Edom, and on the people of my curse, for judgment.
  6. 6The LORD's sword is soaked with blood, dripping with fat — the blood of lambs and goats, the rich fat of rams' kidneys. The LORD is holding a sacrifice in Bozrah, a massive slaughter in the land of Edom.
  7. 7Wild oxen will fall alongside them, young bulls together with the mighty ones. Their land will be drenched with blood, and their soil will be saturated with fat.
  8. 8For it is the day of the LORD's vengeance, and the year of repayment for the dispute concerning Zion.
  9. 9Edom's streams will turn to tar, its dust to sulfur, and its whole land will become a blazing inferno of pitch.
  10. 10It will burn day and night and never be put out. Its smoke will rise forever. Generation after generation, it will lie in ruins. No one will ever pass through it again.
  11. 11But the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it: and he will stretch out upon it the measuring line of chaos and the plumb line of emptiness.
  12. 12They will call its nobles to the kingdom, but none will be there, and all its princes will become nothing.
  13. 13Thorns will overrun its palaces, and weeds and brambles will choke its fortresses. It will become a den for jackals and a haunt for ostriches.
  14. 14The wild beasts of the desert will also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the goat-demon will cry to his fellow. The screech owl will also rest there and find a place of rest for herself.
  15. 15There the great owl will make her nest, lay eggs, hatch them, and gather her young under her shadow. Vultures will also gather there, each with its mate.
  16. 16Search the book of the LORD and read it: not one of these will be missing, none will lack a mate. For my mouth has commanded it, and his spirit has gathered them.
  17. 17He himself has cast lots to divide the land among them, and his hand has measured out their portions. They will possess it forever, living there from generation to generation.
