  1. 1Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground. There is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans, for you will no longer be called tender and delicate.
  2. 2Pick up the millstones and grind flour. Uncover your hair, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, and cross the rivers.
  3. 3Your nakedness will be uncovered, and your shame will be seen. I will take vengeance, and I will not meet you as a man.
  4. 4Our Redeemer — the LORD of hosts is his name — is the Holy One of Israel.
  5. 5Sit in silence and go into darkness, daughter of the Chaldeans, for you will no longer be called the lady of kingdoms.
  6. 6I was angry with my people; I have defiled my inheritance and given them into your hand. You showed them no mercy; you laid your yoke heavily on the elderly.
  7. 7You said, 'I will be a queen forever.' You did not take these things to heart, nor did you remember what the outcome would be.
  8. 8So listen carefully, you who live for pleasure, you who sit so secure, telling yourself, 'I am the one, and there is no one besides me. I will never be a widow, and I will never lose my children.'
  9. 9Both of these disasters will strike you suddenly in a single day — the loss of your children and widowhood. They will come upon you completely because of your many sorceries and the great abundance of your enchantments.
  10. 10You trusted in your own wickedness. You told yourself, 'No one sees what I do.' Your wisdom and knowledge twisted you, and you declared in your heart, 'I am the one, and there is no one besides me.'
  11. 11Therefore, disaster will come upon you, and you will not know where it comes from. Trouble will fall upon you, and you will not be able to avoid it. Destruction will come upon you suddenly, and you will not know it.
  12. 12Stand now with your enchantments and with the multitude of your sorceries, in which you have labored from your youth. Perhaps you will be able to profit; perhaps you may prevail.
  13. 13You are worn out by the multitude of your counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, and those who predict by the months stand up and save you from what will come upon you.
  14. 14Look, they will be like stubble; the fire will burn them. They cannot save themselves from the power of the flame. There will not be a coal to warm oneself by, nor a fire to sit before.
  15. 15This is what will happen to those you have worked with, your merchants from your youth: each will go to his own place; none will save you.
