  1. 1The LORD says, "Show me the divorce papers proving I sent your mother away. Tell me — which creditor did I sell you to? No. You sold yourselves because of your sins, and your mother was sent away because of your rebellion."
  2. 2Why, when I came, was there no man? When I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? Or have I no power to deliver? Look, at my rebuke I dry up the sea; I make the rivers a wilderness. Their fish stink because there is no water, and die for thirst.
  3. 3"I dress the heavens in darkness and wrap them in sackcloth."
  4. 4The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. Morning by morning he wakes me; he wakes my ear to hear as those who are taught.
  5. 5The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, nor did I turn away.
  6. 6I offered my back to those who beat me and my cheeks to those who ripped out my beard. I didn't hide my face from their mockery and spit.
  7. 7Because the Lord GOD helps me, I will not be disgraced. I've set my face like stone, and I know I won't be put to shame.
  8. 8The one who declares me innocent is near. Who dares to bring charges against me? Let them step forward. Who is my accuser? Let him come and face me.
  9. 9Look — the Lord GOD himself will help me! Who can condemn me? All my accusers will wear out like old clothes; moths will eat them away.
  10. 10Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of his servant, who walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.
  11. 11But watch out, all of you who light your own fires and surround yourselves with your own torches — go ahead, walk by the light of your own flames and the sparks you've kindled. This is what you'll receive from my hand: you will lie down in torment.
