- 1"Listen to me, all of you who pursue righteousness and seek the LORD. Think about the rock you were cut from, the quarry where you were carved out.
- 2Look to Abraham, your father, and to Sarah, who gave birth to you. I called him when he was alone, and I blessed him and increased him.
- 3The LORD will comfort Zion. He will comfort all her ruined places, turning her wilderness into Eden and her desert into the garden of the LORD. Joy and gladness will fill her — thanksgiving and the sound of singing.
- 4"Pay attention to me, my people; listen closely, my nation. A law will go out from me, and I will establish my justice as a light for all peoples.
- 5My righteousness is near; my salvation has gone out, and my arms will judge the people. The distant coastlands will wait for me, and they will trust in my arm.
- 6Look up at the heavens and look down at the earth beneath. The heavens will vanish like smoke, and the earth will wear out like old clothing. Everyone living on it will die in the same way. But my salvation will last forever, and my righteousness will never be undone.
- 7Listen to me, you who know righteousness, the people who have my law in your hearts. Do not fear the reproach of men, nor be afraid of their revilings.
- 8Moths will eat them up like a garment, and worms will devour them like wool. But my righteousness will last forever, and my salvation will endure through every generation."
- 9Wake up, wake up! Clothe yourself in strength, O arm of the LORD! Rise up as you did in ancient days, in generations long past. Wasn't it you who cut Rahab to pieces and wounded the dragon?
- 10Wasn't it you who dried up the sea — the waters of the great deep — and turned the ocean floor into a road for the redeemed to cross over?
- 11Therefore the redeemed of the LORD will return and come with singing to Zion; everlasting joy will be upon their heads. They will obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and mourning will flee away.
- 12I, yes, I am the one who comforts you. Who are you to fear a man who will die or a son of man who will be made like grass?
- 13Have you forgotten the LORD, your Maker, who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth? You live in constant terror every day because of the fury of your oppressor, as though he were about to destroy you. But where is that oppressor's fury now?
- 14The captive exile hurries to be freed, so he will not die in the pit, nor will his bread run out.
- 15But I am the LORD your God, who divided the sea, whose waves roared. The LORD of hosts is his name.
- 16I have placed my words in your mouth and sheltered you in the shadow of my hand, so that I may plant the heavens, lay the foundations of the earth, and say to Zion, 'You are my people.'
- 17Wake up, wake up! Stand up, Jerusalem! You have drunk from the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; you have drained the dregs of the cup of trembling.
- 18Out of all the children she raised, not one is left to guide her. Out of all the sons she brought up, not one takes her by the hand.
- 19These two disasters have come upon you; who will grieve for you? Ruin and destruction, famine and the sword. By whom shall I comfort you?
- 20Your sons have collapsed. They lie at every street corner, like a wild bull caught in a net, full of the LORD's fury, the rebuke of your God.
- 21So listen to this, you who are suffering — you who stagger, but not from wine:
- 22This is what your Lord, the LORD, and your God who pleads the cause of his people says: 'Look, I have taken from your hand the cup of trembling, the dregs of my fury. You will no longer drink from it again.'
- 23Instead, I will hand it to those who tormented you — the ones who said to your soul, 'Lie down on the ground so we can walk over you.' And you laid your back flat like a street for them to trample on.
