  1. 1Listen — the LORD's hand is not too weak to save you, and his ear is not too dull to hear you.
  2. 2But your iniquities have created a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so he will not hear.
  3. 3For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue has muttered perverseness.
  4. 4No one calls for justice; no one argues honestly. They rely on empty words and speak lies. They dream up trouble and give birth to evil.
  5. 5They hatch the eggs of vipers and spin spider webs. Anyone who eats their eggs dies, and if one is crushed, a snake bursts out.
  6. 6Their webs will not become garments, neither will they cover themselves with their works. Their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.
  7. 7Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.
  8. 8They don't know the path of peace, and there's no justice in the way they live. They've twisted every road they walk, and anyone who follows them will never find peace.
  9. 9Therefore, judgment is far from us, and justice does not reach us. We look for light, but see only obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness.
  10. 10We feel along the wall like blind people, groping as though we have no eyes. We stumble at noon as if it were night; we are in desolate places like dead men.
  11. 11We all roar like bears and mourn deeply like doves. We look for judgment, but there is none; we look for salvation, but it is far from us.
  12. 12For our transgressions have increased before you, and our sins testify against us. Our transgressions are with us, and we know our iniquities;
  13. 13In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and turning away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.
  14. 14Justice has been driven back, and righteousness stands at a distance. Truth has collapsed in the public square, and honesty can't even get through the gate.
  15. 15Truth has failed, and anyone who turns away from evil makes himself a target. The LORD saw this, and it displeased him that there was no justice.
  16. 16He saw that there was no one, and was amazed that there was no intercessor. So his own arm brought salvation to him, and his righteousness upheld him.
  17. 17He strapped on righteousness like a breastplate and placed the helmet of salvation on his head. He dressed himself in garments of vengeance and wrapped himself in zeal like a cloak.
  18. 18He will repay everyone according to their deeds—fury to his adversaries, recompense to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompense.
  19. 19So they will fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD will lift up a standard against him.
  20. 20"A Redeemer will come to Zion — to those in Jacob who turn away from their rebellion," declares the LORD.
  21. 21"As for me, this is my covenant with them," says the LORD. "My Spirit, who rests on you, and my words that I have placed in your mouth will never leave your mouth, or the mouth of your children, or the mouth of your children's children," says the LORD, "from this moment and forever."
