  1. 1Cry aloud, do not hold back; lift up your voice like a trumpet, and show my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.
  2. 2They go through the motions of seeking me every day, acting eager to learn my ways. They behave as if they were a nation that actually did what was right and never abandoned the commands of their God. They ask me for righteous judgments. They act delighted to come close to God.
  3. 3"Why have we fasted," they say, "and you do not see? Why have we afflicted our soul, and you do not notice?" Look, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and exact all your labors.
  4. 4Your fasting leads to fighting and arguing, to striking each other with vicious fists. You can't fast the way you do today and expect your voice to be heard in heaven.
  5. 5Is this the kind of fast I have chosen—a day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?
  6. 6"No — this is the fast I've chosen: break the chains of injustice, untie the ropes of every burden, set the oppressed free, and shatter every yoke.
  7. 7Share your food with the hungry. Bring the homeless poor into your house. When you see someone without clothes, give them something to wear. Don't turn your back on your own family.
  8. 8Then your light will burst through like the dawn, and your healing will come quickly. Your righteousness will go ahead of you, and the glory of the LORD will guard you from behind.
  9. 9Then you will call, and the LORD will answer. You will cry out, and he will say, "Here I am." If you remove the yoke from among you, stop pointing fingers, and stop speaking empty words;
  10. 10and if you pour out your soul to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your darkness will be like the noonday.
  11. 11The LORD will guide you continually, satisfy your soul in drought, and make your bones strong. You will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters never fail.
  12. 12Those who come from you will rebuild the ancient ruins; you will raise up the foundations of many generations. You will be called 'Repairer of the Breach' and 'Restorer of Paths to Dwell In.'
  13. 13If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD honorable, and honor him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words,
  14. 14then you will find your delight in the LORD. I will set you high above the earth and nourish you with the inheritance of your ancestor Jacob." The mouth of the LORD has spoken it.
