- 1From James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the 12 tribes scattered across the world: Greetings.
- 2My brothers and sisters, consider it all joy when you fall into various temptations;
- 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces patience.
- 4But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
- 5If any of you needs wisdom, ask God for it. He gives generously to everyone without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
- 6But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt. A person who doubts is like a wave in the ocean, blown and tossed by the wind.
- 7That person shouldn't expect to receive anything from the Lord.
- 8A double-minded person is unstable in everything they do.
- 9Let the brother of low position rejoice in that he is exalted:
- 10But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he will pass away.
- 11The sun rises with scorching heat and dries up the grass; its flowers fall, and their beauty perishes. In the same way, the rich man will fade away in his ways.
- 12Blessed is the person who endures temptation, for when they are tested, they will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
- 13When someone is tempted, they should never say, "God is tempting me." God cannot be tempted by evil, and he doesn't tempt anyone.
- 14But each person is tempted when they are drawn away by their own lust and enticed.
- 15Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.
- 16Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.
- 17Every good and perfect gift comes from above, coming down from the Father of lights. He never changes or shifts like a moving shadow.
- 18By his own will, he brought us forth with the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
- 19Therefore, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
- 20For the wrath of man does not accomplish the righteousness of God.
- 21So strip away all filthiness and excess of wickedness, and humbly receive the engrafted word, which has the power to save your souls.
- 22Don't just listen to the word. Do what it says. Otherwise, you're only fooling yourselves.
- 23Anyone who listens to the word but doesn't act on it is like someone who looks at their face in a mirror,
- 24takes a look, walks away, and immediately forgets what they looked like.
- 25But whoever looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, not being a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this person will be blessed in their doing.
- 26If anyone among you seems to be religious but does not bridle his tongue, he deceives his own heart, and his religion is worthless.
- 27Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
