- 1These are the words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests living in Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.
- 2To whom the word of the LORD came during the reign of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, in the 13th year of his rule.
- 3It also came during the days of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, son of Josiah, king of Judah, until Jerusalem was taken captive in the fifth month.
- 4Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
- 5Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I set you apart and appointed you as a prophet to the nations.
- 6Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! Look, I cannot speak, for I am a child."
- 7But the LORD told me, "Don't say 'I'm just a child.' You will go wherever I send you, and you will say whatever I command you to say.
- 8Do not be afraid of their faces, for I am with you to deliver you," declares the LORD.
- 9Then the LORD reached out his hand and touched my mouth. The LORD said to me, "Look, I have put my words in your mouth."
- 10See, I have today appointed you over the nations and kingdoms, to root out and pull down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.
- 11The word of the LORD came to me again: "Jeremiah, what do you see?" I answered, "I see a branch from an almond tree."
- 12The LORD said to me, "You have seen correctly, for I will act quickly to carry out my word."
- 13The word of the LORD came to me a second time: "What do you see?" I answered, "I see a boiling pot, tilting away from the north."
- 14The LORD said to me, "Disaster will pour out from the north onto everyone living in this land.
- 15I am about to summon all the ruling families of the northern kingdoms," declares the LORD. "They will come and set up their thrones right at the entrance of Jerusalem's gates, against all its surrounding walls, and against every city in Judah.
- 16I will pronounce my judgments against them for all their wickedness—they have abandoned me, burned incense to other gods, and worshiped what they made with their own hands.
- 17So prepare yourself, stand up, and speak to them everything I command you. Do not be terrified by their faces, or I will crush you before them.
- 18Today I have made you like a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls — standing firm against the entire land: against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and all its people.
- 19They will fight against you, but they will not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the LORD, to deliver you.
