  1. 1"Judah's sin is etched with an iron pen, carved with a diamond point. It's engraved on the tablet of their heart and on the horns of their altars.
  2. 2Even their children remember their altars and groves by the green trees on the high hills.
  3. 3My mountain in the open country — I will hand over your wealth and all your treasures as plunder, along with your high places, because of sin throughout your land.
  4. 4You will lose the inheritance I gave you. I will make you serve your enemies in a land you've never known, because you have lit a fire in my anger that will burn forever.
  5. 5This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the person who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, and whose heart turns away from the LORD."
  6. 6That person will be like a shrub in the desert — they won't even notice when good things come. They'll live in scorched wastelands, in a salty, barren land where no one dwells.
  7. 7Blessed is the person who trusts in the LORD, and whose hope is the LORD.
  8. 8That person will be like a tree planted by the waters, spreading its roots by the river. It will not notice when heat comes, and its leaves will stay green. It will not be anxious in a year of drought and will never stop producing fruit.
  9. 9The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked. Who can know it?
  10. 10I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the inner thoughts, to give every person according to their ways and according to the fruit of their actions.
  11. 11Like a partridge that sits on eggs but does not hatch them, so is the person who gains wealth dishonestly. In the middle of his life, he will leave it behind, and in the end, he will be a fool.
  12. 12Our sanctuary is a glorious throne, exalted from the very beginning.
  13. 13LORD, you are the hope of Israel! Everyone who abandons you will be put to shame. Those who turn away from me will be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.
  14. 14Heal me, LORD, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved — for you are the one I praise.
  15. 15Look, they say to me, 'Where is the word of the LORD? Let it come now.'
  16. 16As for me, I have not hurried from being a shepherd to follow you. Neither have I desired the day of disaster. You know: what came out of my lips was before you.
  17. 17Do not be a terror to me; you are my hope in the day of evil.
  18. 18Let those who persecute me be put to shame — but don't let me be shamed. Let them be filled with dread — but spare me from it. Bring the day of disaster on them, and shatter them with double destruction.
  19. 19The LORD told me, "Go and stand at the gate of the children of the people, where the kings of Judah enter and exit, and at all the gates of Jerusalem."
  20. 20Tell them, 'Listen to the word of the LORD, you kings of Judah, all you people of Judah, and everyone living in Jerusalem who passes through these gates:
  21. 21This is what the LORD says: Watch yourselves carefully! Don't carry any loads on the Sabbath day, and don't bring them through the gates of Jerusalem.
  22. 22Don't carry loads out of your houses on the Sabbath. Don't do any work at all. Keep the Sabbath day holy, just as I commanded your ancestors.
  23. 23But they refused to listen. They wouldn't pay attention. Instead, they stiffened their necks so they wouldn't have to hear or accept correction.
  24. 24Now, if you truly obey me," declares the LORD, "and bring no loads through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but instead keep the Sabbath holy by doing no work —
  25. 25then kings and princes who sit on David's throne will continue to enter through the gates of this city, riding in chariots and on horses — they and their officials, along with the people of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem. And this city will stand forever.
  26. 26People will come from the towns of Judah, from the villages around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin, from the western foothills, from the hill country, and from the southern desert. They'll bring burnt offerings, sacrifices, meat offerings, incense, and sacrifices of praise to the house of the LORD.
  27. 27But if you refuse to listen to me and won't keep the Sabbath holy — if you carry loads through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day — then I will set fire to those gates, and it will consume the palaces of Jerusalem with a blaze that no one can put out.'"
