- 1This is what the LORD says: Go and buy a clay jar from a potter, and take some of the elders of the people and some of the senior priests;
- 2and go out to the valley of Ben Hinnom, near the entrance of the east gate. When you get there, proclaim the words I'm about to tell you.
- 3Say to them, 'Listen to the word of the LORD, you kings of Judah and people of Jerusalem! The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says this: "I am about to bring such disaster on this place that everyone who hears about it will have their ears tingle."
- 4Because they have abandoned me and made this place foreign, and have burned incense here to other gods, whom neither they nor their ancestors nor the kings of Judah have known, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;
- 5They have also built the high places of Baal to burn their sons with fire as burnt offerings to Baal, which I did not command, nor did I speak of it, nor did it enter my mind.
- 6So the days are coming," declares the LORD, "when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the valley of Ben Hinnom. Instead, it will be called the Valley of Slaughter.
- 7And I will make the plans of Judah and Jerusalem useless in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, by the hands of those who seek their lives. Their corpses will be given as food for the birds of the heaven and the beasts of the earth.
- 8I will make this city desolate and a place of scorn; everyone who passes by will be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues.
- 9I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and they will eat the flesh of their friends during the siege and hardship, when their enemies who seek their lives press hard against them.
- 10"Then, while the men who came with you are watching, smash the clay jar.
- 11Tell them, 'The LORD of hosts says this: "Just as this potter's jar is shattered beyond repair, so I will shatter this people and this city. The dead will be buried in Topheth until there's no room left for another grave.
- 12This is what I will do to this place," declares the LORD, "and to everyone living in it. I will make this entire city like Topheth.
- 13The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled like the place of Tophet, because of all the houses on whose roofs they have burned incense to all the host of heaven and poured out drink offerings to other gods.
- 14Jeremiah then returned from Topheth, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy. He went and stood in the courtyard of the LORD's temple and addressed all the people.
- 15He said, "The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says this: 'I am about to bring upon this city and all her towns all the disaster I have declared against it, because they have hardened their necks and refused to listen to my words.'"
