  1. 1The LORD showed me, and there were two baskets of figs placed in front of the temple of the LORD. This happened after Nebuchadrezzar, king of Babylon, had taken Jeconiah, the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, along with the princes of Judah, the carpenters, and the smiths, from Jerusalem to Babylon.
  2. 2One basket had very good figs, like the ones that ripen first. The other basket had very naughty figs, which could not be eaten because they were so bad.
  3. 3The LORD asked me, "What do you see, Jeremiah?" I answered, "Figs. The good figs are very good, and the evil figs are so evil they cannot be eaten."
  4. 4Then the LORD spoke to me again:
  5. 5This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Like these good figs, I will acknowledge the exiles from Judah — the ones I sent away from this place to the land of the Chaldeans for their own good.
  6. 6I will watch over them for their good and bring them back to this land. I will build them up and not tear them down; I will plant them and not uproot them.
  7. 7I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD. They will be my people, and I will be their God, because they will return to me with their whole heart.
  8. 8But as for the evil figs that are too bad to eat, this is what the LORD says: I will give Zedekiah, the king of Judah, his officials, and the remnant of Jerusalem who remain in this land, and those living in Egypt.
  9. 9I will scatter them to all the kingdoms of the earth for their harm, making them a reproach, a proverb, a taunt, and a curse in every place where I drive them.
  10. 10I will send the sword, famine, and pestilence among them until they are consumed from the land I gave to them and their ancestors.
