- 1This message came to Jeremiah about all the people of Judah during the 4th year of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah — which was also the 1st year of King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon.
- 2Jeremiah the prophet delivered this message to all the people of Judah and everyone living in Jerusalem:
- 3"For 23 years now — from the 13th year of King Josiah son of Amon of Judah until today — the LORD has been giving me his word. I've spoken to you again and again, but you haven't listened.
- 4The LORD sent all his servants the prophets to you, time after time, but you refused to listen or even pay attention.
- 5They told you, 'Each of you must turn away from your evil ways and your wicked actions. Then you can go on living in the land the LORD gave to you and your ancestors forever.
- 6Don't chase after other gods, serving and worshiping them. Don't provoke me to anger with things you've made with your own hands, and I won't bring disaster on you.'
- 7"But you wouldn't listen to me," declares the LORD. "Instead, you provoked me to anger with the things your hands have made, bringing disaster on yourselves."
- 8So the LORD of hosts says: "Because you have not listened to my words,
- 9I am going to summon all the peoples of the north," declares the LORD, "along with my servant King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon. I will bring them against this land, against everyone living in it, and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy them and turn them into an object of horror, of mockery, and of permanent ruin.
- 10I will take away from them every sound of joy and celebration — the happy voices of brides and grooms, the grinding of millstones, and the light of lamps.
- 11This entire land will become a desolate wasteland that shocks everyone who sees it, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon for 70 years.
- 12But when those 70 years are over," declares the LORD, "I will punish the king of Babylon and his nation for their sin. I will turn the land of the Chaldeans into a permanent wasteland.
- 13I will bring upon that land all the words I have spoken against it, everything written in this book that Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations.
- 14Many nations and powerful kings will enslave them in return, and I will repay them for what they've done — for the work of their own hands."
- 15The LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: 'Take the wine cup of this fury from my hand and make all the nations I send you to drink it.'
- 16They will drink it and stagger around like madmen because of the sword I am sending against them."
- 17So I took the cup from the LORD's hand and made every nation drink from it — every nation the LORD sent me to:
- 18Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, along with their kings and officials — to make them a desolate ruin, an object of horror, mockery, and cursing, as they are today;
- 19Pharaoh king of Egypt, his officials, his servants, and all his people;
- 20all the foreigners living among them; all the kings of the land of Uz; all the kings of the Philistines — Ashkelon, Azzah, Ekron, and what was left of Ashdod;
- 21Edom, Moab, and the people of Ammon;
- 22all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the coastlands across the sea;
- 23Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all those in the farthest corners,
- 24all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the mixed peoples living in the wilderness;
- 25all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes;
- 26and all the kings of the north, near and far, one after another — every kingdom on the face of the earth. And after all of them, the king of Sheshach will drink from the cup too.
- 27"Then tell them, 'This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: Drink! Get drunk, vomit, collapse, and never get up again — because of the sword I am sending against you.'
- 28If they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink, tell them, 'The LORD of hosts says: You will drink it — there is no choice.
- 29For, look, I am beginning to bring evil on the city that is called by my name. Do you really think you will go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am calling for a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth,' declares the LORD of hosts.
- 30Now prophesy all these words against them and say: 'The LORD will roar from on high and thunder from his holy dwelling. He will roar mightily over his habitation. He will shout like those who tread grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.'
- 31The uproar will reach the ends of the earth, because the LORD has a case against the nations. He is bringing all of humanity to judgment. The wicked will be handed over to the sword,' declares the LORD."
- 32The LORD of hosts says: "Watch — disaster is spreading from nation to nation. A massive storm is rising from the farthest corners of the earth."
- 33On that day, those the LORD has killed will lie scattered from one end of the earth to the other. No one will mourn for them. No one will gather them up or bury them. Their bodies will lie on the ground like dung.
- 34Howl, you shepherds, and cry; and roll in the ashes, you leaders of the flock, for the days of your slaughter and of your scattering are accomplished, and you will fall like a pleasant vessel.
- 35The leaders will have nowhere to run. The rulers of the flock will find no escape.
- 36Listen to the leaders crying out, the rulers of the flock wailing — because the LORD has spoiled their pasture.
- 37And the peaceful dwellings are cut down because of the fierce anger of the LORD.
- 38He has left his lair like a lion, for their land is desolate because of the fierceness of the oppressor and because of his fierce anger.
