  1. 1This is the message that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
  2. 2"The LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Write down everything I have spoken to you in a book.
  3. 3The days are coming,' declares the LORD, 'when I will bring my people Israel and Judah back from captivity. I will return them to the land I gave their ancestors, and they will take possession of it again.'"
  4. 4These are the words the LORD spoke about Israel and Judah.
  5. 5The LORD says: "We have heard cries of terror — voices filled with fear, not peace.
  6. 6Ask now, and see whether a man can give birth. Why do I see every man with his hands on his waist like a woman in labor, and all faces turned pale?
  7. 7Alas! That day will be great, unlike any other. It is the time of Jacob's trouble, but he will be saved from it.
  8. 8On that day," declares the LORD of hosts, "I will break the yoke from your neck and tear your chains apart. Foreigners will no longer enslave him.
  9. 9Instead, they will serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.
  10. 10So don't be afraid, Jacob my servant," declares the LORD. "Don't be dismayed, Israel. I will rescue you from distant lands and bring your descendants home from the countries where they are held captive. Jacob will return and live in peace and quiet, and no one will make him afraid.
  11. 11I am with you to save you," declares the LORD. "I will completely destroy every nation where I scattered you, but I will not completely destroy you. I will discipline you fairly — but I will not let you go unpunished."
  12. 12The LORD says: "Your wound is beyond healing. Your injury is severe.
  13. 13No one steps forward to defend your case. There is no bandage for your wound, no medicine that can heal you.
  14. 14All your allies have forgotten you — they don't even look for you anymore. I struck you the way an enemy would, with the harsh punishment of a cruel attacker, because your guilt was so enormous and your sins so many.
  15. 15Why do you cry out over your suffering? Your pain cannot be cured. Because your guilt was so enormous and your sins so many, I did this to you.
  16. 16Therefore, everyone who devoured you will be devoured; all your adversaries, every one of them, will go into captivity. Those who plundered you will be plundered, and all who preyed on you I will give as prey.
  17. 17I will restore your health and heal your wounds," declares the LORD, "because they called you an outcast, saying, 'That's Zion — nobody cares about her.'"
  18. 18This is what the LORD says: "Look, I will restore Jacob's tents from captivity and have mercy on his homes. The city will be rebuilt on its own heap, and the palace will remain after its former manner."
  19. 19Thanksgiving and the voices of those who celebrate will come from them. I will multiply them, and they will not be few; I will also glorify them, and they will not be small.
  20. 20Their children will be as they were in the past, and their congregation will be established before me. I will punish all who oppress them.
  21. 21Their nobles will be from among them, and their governor will come from their midst. I will cause him to draw near, and he will approach me. For who is this that has engaged his heart to come near me? declares the LORD.
  22. 22"You will be my people, and I will be your God."
  23. 23Look — the LORD's fury has gone out like a whirlwind, a driving storm that will crash down on the heads of the wicked.
  24. 24The fierce anger of the LORD will not turn back until he has finished his work and carried out every intention of his heart. In the days to come, you will understand all of this.
