  1. 1The LORD spoke to Jeremiah during the 10th year of King Zedekiah of Judah's reign, which was the 18th year of Nebuchadrezzar.
  2. 2At that time, the Babylonian army had Jerusalem under siege, and Jeremiah the prophet was locked up in the courtyard of the guard station inside the king of Judah's palace.
  3. 3King Zedekiah of Judah had imprisoned him, demanding, "Why do you keep prophesying? You say, 'The LORD declares: I am going to hand this city over to the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.
  4. 4King Zedekiah of Judah won't escape the Chaldeans. He will be handed over to the king of Babylon and will speak with him face to face, looking him straight in the eyes.
  5. 5He will take Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him, says the LORD. Even if you fight the Chaldeans, you will not win.'"
  6. 6Jeremiah said, "The LORD's word came to me:
  7. 7'Your cousin Hanameel, the son of your uncle Shallum, is going to come to you and say, "Buy my field in Anathoth, because as the closest relative, you have the right to buy it."'
  8. 8Just as the LORD had said, my cousin Hanameel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said, 'Please buy my field in Anathoth, in the territory of Benjamin. You have the right of inheritance and the right to redeem it — buy it for yourself.' That's when I knew for certain this was the LORD's word.
  9. 9So I bought the field in Anathoth from my cousin Hanameel and weighed out the payment — 17 shekels of silver.
  10. 10I signed the deed, sealed it, brought in witnesses, and weighed out the silver on the scales.
  11. 11Then I took the deed of purchase — both the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, and the open copy —
  12. 12and I handed them to Baruch son of Neriah, son of Maaseiah. I did this in front of my cousin Hanameel, in front of the witnesses who had signed the deed, and in front of all the people of Judah who were sitting in the courtyard of the guard.
  13. 13Then, in front of everyone, I gave Baruch these instructions:
  14. 14The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: Take these deeds — both the sealed copy and the open copy — and store them in a clay jar so they will be preserved for a long time.
  15. 15For this is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields, and vineyards will once again be owned in this land.
  16. 16After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah, I prayed to the LORD:
  17. 17"Lord GOD! You made the heavens and the earth by your great power and your outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.
  18. 18You show faithful love to thousands, and repay the iniquity of the fathers into the lap of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name,
  19. 19Great in counsel and mighty in work, for your eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, to give each person according to his ways and the fruit of his doings.
  20. 20You performed signs and wonders in Egypt — and you continue to do so to this day, both in Israel and among all nations. You made a name for yourself that endures to this day.
  21. 21You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and with great terror.
  22. 22You gave them this land that you had sworn to their ancestors — a land flowing with milk and honey.
  23. 23They came in and took possession of it, but they didn't obey you or follow your law. They failed to do anything you commanded them. That is why you brought all this disaster on them.
  24. 24Look — the siege ramps are already built up against the city walls to capture it. Because of war, famine, and disease, the city is being handed over to the Chaldeans who are attacking it. Everything you said would happen has come true — you can see it with your own eyes.
  25. 25And yet, Lord GOD, you told me, 'Buy the field with silver and bring witnesses' — even though the city is being handed over to the Chaldeans!"
  26. 26Then the LORD's word came to Jeremiah:
  27. 27I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?
  28. 28Therefore, the LORD says: I am going to hand this city over to the Chaldeans and to King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon, and he will capture it.
  29. 29The Chaldeans attacking this city will come, set it on fire, and burn it down, including the houses where they burned incense to Baal on the rooftops and poured out drink offerings to other gods, provoking my anger.
  30. 30The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil before me from their youth. The people of Israel have done nothing but provoke my anger with the work of their hands, says the LORD.
  31. 31From the day this city was built until now, it has been nothing but a source of my anger and fury. That is why I must remove it from my sight.
  32. 32All the evil that the people of Israel and Judah have done to provoke my anger — their kings, their officials, their priests, their prophets, the people of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem —
  33. 33they turned their backs on me instead of their faces. Even though I taught them again and again, they refused to listen or accept correction.
  34. 34They placed their disgusting idols in the house that bears my name, making it unclean.
  35. 35They built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Molech — which I did not command them, nor did it come into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.
  36. 36"Now then, here is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about this city — the one you say is being handed over to the king of Babylon through war, famine, and disease:
  37. 37I will gather my people from every country where I scattered them in my anger, fury, and fierce rage. I will bring them back to this place and let them live here in safety.
  38. 38They will be my people, and I will be their God.
  39. 39I will give them one heart and one path, so they may fear me forever, for their good and the good of their children after them.
  40. 40I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good for them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts so they will never turn away from me.
  41. 41I will take delight in doing good for them, and I will assuredly plant them in this land with all my heart and all my soul.
  42. 42The LORD says: "Just as I brought all this terrible disaster on these people, I will also bring them every good thing I have promised.
  43. 43Fields will be bought again in this land — the very land you now say is a wasteland, empty of people and animals, handed over to the Chaldeans.
  44. 44People will buy fields with money, sign deeds, seal them, and call witnesses—in the land of Benjamin, in the areas around Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, in the hill country, in the lowlands, and in the southern region. For I will bring back their captivity," says the LORD.
