- 1The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah a second time while he was still confined in the courtyard of the guard, saying,
- 2"This is what the LORD says — the one who made the earth, who shaped it and set it in place. The LORD is his name:
- 3Call out to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things you do not know.
- 4The LORD, the God of Israel, says this about the houses of this city and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the siege ramps and by the sword:
- 5They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is to fill the place with the dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in my anger and fury, and because of all their wickedness, I have hidden my face from this city.
- 6Look, I will bring it health and healing, and I will heal them, and will reveal to them the abundance of peace and truth.
- 7I will bring the captives of Judah and Israel back home and rebuild them just as they were before.
- 8I will cleanse them from all their iniquity by which they have sinned against me, and I will forgive all their iniquities by which they have sinned, and by which they have transgressed against me.
- 9And it will be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honor before all the nations of the earth, who will hear all the good that I do for them. And they will fear and tremble because of all the goodness and all the prosperity that I bring to it.
- 10Thus says the LORD: Again, in this place that you say is desolate, without people or animals, in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem that are deserted, without people, inhabitants, or animals, there will be heard again
- 11The voice of joy and the voice of gladness will be heard again—the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who will say, 'Praise the LORD of hosts, for the LORD is good; for his mercy endures forever.' They will bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the LORD. For I will cause the captivity of the land to return, as it was at first, says the LORD.
- 12The LORD of hosts says: "In this place that is now a wasteland — empty of people and animals — and in all its surrounding cities, there will once again be pastures where shepherds rest their flocks.
- 13In the hill country towns, the lowland towns, the towns of the southern desert, the land of Benjamin, the villages around Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah — flocks will once again pass under the shepherd's hand as he counts them," says the LORD.
- 14"The time is coming," says the LORD, "when I will fulfill the good promise I made to the people of Israel and Judah.
- 15In those days and at that time, I will cause a Branch of righteousness to grow up for David, and he will execute judgment and righteousness in the land.
- 16In those days, Judah will be rescued and Jerusalem will live in safety. This is the name she will be called: 'The LORD Our Righteousness.'"
- 17The LORD says: David will always have a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel.
- 18And the Levitical priests will never lack a descendant to stand before me, offering burnt offerings, grain offerings, and sacrifices — always."
- 19Then the LORD spoke to Jeremiah again:
- 20"The LORD says: 'If you could somehow break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night — so that daylight and darkness no longer come at their appointed times —
- 21only then could my covenant with my servant David be broken, so that he would have no descendant to reign on his throne. Only then could my covenant with the Levitical priests who serve me be broken.
- 22Just as the stars in the sky cannot be counted and the sand on the seashore cannot be measured, so I will multiply the descendants of my servant David and the Levites who minister to me.'"
- 23The LORD spoke to Jeremiah again:
- 24Have you noticed what these people are saying? They say, 'The two families which the LORD chose, he has now rejected.' They have despised my people, thinking they should no longer be a nation before them.
- 25The LORD says: "If I had not established my covenant with day and night — if I had not set the laws that govern heaven and earth —
- 26then I will reject the descendants of Jacob and my servant David, so that I will not choose any of his descendants to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will bring them back from captivity and have mercy on them.
