- 1During the reign of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah over Judah, the LORD gave this message to Jeremiah:
- 2"Go to the Rechabite family and speak with them. Bring them into one of the rooms in the LORD's house and offer them wine to drink."
- 3So I went and gathered Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, the son of Habaziniah, along with his brothers, all his sons, and the entire Rechabite family.
- 4I brought them into the LORD's house, to the room belonging to the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah, a man of God. This room was next to the room used by the officials and above the room of Maaseiah son of Shallum, the keeper of the door.
- 5I set out bowls full of wine and cups in front of the Rechabites and said to them, "Drink the wine."
- 6But they refused. "We don't drink wine," they said. "Our ancestor Jonadab son of Rechab gave us a command: 'You and your descendants must never drink wine.
- 7You must not build houses, sow seed, plant vineyards, or own them. Instead, you will live in tents all your days so that you may live many days in the land where you are foreigners.
- 8We have obeyed everything our ancestor Jonadab son of Rechab told us. None of us has ever drunk wine — not us, not our wives, not our sons, not our daughters.
- 9We haven't built houses to live in, and we have no vineyards, no fields, and no seed.
- 10We've lived in tents and followed every command our ancestor Jonadab gave us.
- 11But when King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon invaded the land, we said, 'Let's go to Jerusalem to escape the Chaldean and Syrian armies.' That's why we're living in Jerusalem now."
- 12Then the LORD spoke to Jeremiah:
- 13This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell the people of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem, 'Will you not receive instruction to listen to my words?' declares the LORD.
- 14Jonadab son of Rechab commanded his sons not to drink wine, and they have obeyed him to this day. They drink none, following their father's command. But I have spoken to you again and again, yet you have not listened to me.
- 15I have sent all my servants the prophets to you again and again, saying, "Each of you must turn from your evil way and change your actions. Do not go after other gods to serve them, and you will live in the land I have given to you and your fathers." But you have not paid attention or listened to me.
- 16The descendants of Jonadab son of Rechab have carried out the commandment their father gave them, but my own people have not listened to me.
- 17"So this is what the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, says: 'I am going to bring down on Judah and on everyone living in Jerusalem every disaster I warned them about — because I spoke to them and they didn't listen, I called out to them and they didn't answer.'"
- 18Then Jeremiah turned to the Rechabites and said, "This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: 'Because you have obeyed the commands of your ancestor Jonadab, kept all his instructions, and done everything he told you to do —
- 19Therefore this is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: Jonadab son of Rechab will not lack a man to stand before me forever.
