- 1During the 4th year of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah's reign over Judah, the LORD spoke this message to Jeremiah:
- 2"Get a scroll and write down everything I've told you — every word I've spoken against Israel, against Judah, and against all the nations, from the very first time I spoke to you back in the days of Josiah right up to today.
- 3Maybe when the people of Judah hear about all the disaster I'm planning to bring on them, each one of them will turn away from their evil ways. Then I can forgive their sin and wrongdoing."
- 4So Jeremiah called for Baruch son of Neriah. As Jeremiah dictated every word the LORD had spoken to him, Baruch wrote it all down on a scroll.
- 5Then Jeremiah gave Baruch these instructions: "I'm restricted and can't go to the LORD's temple myself.
- 6So you need to go instead. On the next day of fasting, read the scroll you wrote from my dictation — the words of the LORD — out loud to all the people gathered in the LORD's temple. Read it so that everyone from the towns of Judah who has come to Jerusalem can hear it too.
- 7Perhaps they will present their supplication before the LORD and each will turn from their evil way, because the anger and fury the LORD has declared against this people is great.
- 8Baruch son of Neriah did exactly what Jeremiah the prophet told him to do. He went to the LORD's temple and read the words of the LORD from the scroll.
- 9In the 9th month of the 5th year of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah's reign over Judah, a fast was proclaimed before the LORD for all the people in Jerusalem and everyone who had come from the towns of Judah.
- 10Baruch read Jeremiah's words from the scroll to all the people at the LORD's temple. He stood in the room of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe, which was in the upper courtyard near the entrance of the New Gate of the LORD's temple.
- 11When Micaiah son of Gemariah and grandson of Shaphan heard all the words of the LORD read from the scroll,
- 12he went down to the royal palace, to the scribe's room. All the officials were sitting there: Elishama the scribe, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials.
- 13Micaiah reported to them everything he had heard Baruch read from the scroll to the people.
- 14So all the officials sent Jehudi son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Cushi, to Baruch with this message: "Bring the scroll you read to the people and come here." Baruch son of Neriah picked up the scroll and went to them.
- 15"Please sit down and read it to us," they said. So Baruch read it aloud to them.
- 16When they heard all the words, they were all afraid and said to Baruch, "We will surely tell the king all these words."
- 17They asked Baruch, "Tell us, how did you write all these words as he spoke them?"
- 18Baruch answered them, saying, "He spoke all these words to me, and I wrote them with ink in the book."
- 19Then the officials told Baruch, "You and Jeremiah need to go into hiding right now. Don't let anyone know where you are."
- 20They stored the scroll in the room of Elishama the scribe, then went to the king in the courtyard and reported everything to him.
- 21The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll. He retrieved it from Elishama the scribe's room, and Jehudi read it aloud to the king and all the officials standing around him.
- 22It was the 9th month, and the king was sitting in his winter quarters with a fire burning in the brazier in front of him.
- 23After Jehudi read three or four columns, he cut them with a small knife and threw them into the fire on the hearth, until the entire scroll was burned in the fire on the hearth.
- 24Neither the king nor any of his attendants who heard these words showed any fear or tore their clothes.
- 25Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah had begged the king not to burn the scroll, but he refused to listen to them.
- 26The king ordered Jerahmeel son of Hammelech, Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but the LORD hid them.
- 27After the king burned the scroll containing the words Baruch had written at Jeremiah's dictation, the LORD spoke to Jeremiah again:
- 28"Get another scroll and write on it everything that was on the first scroll — the one King Jehoiakim of Judah burned.
- 29As for King Jehoiakim of Judah, tell him this is what the LORD says: 'You burned that scroll and demanded to know why Jeremiah wrote that the king of Babylon would certainly come and destroy this land, wiping out every person and animal in it.
- 30So this is what the LORD says about King Jehoiakim of Judah: None of his descendants will sit on David's throne. His dead body will be thrown out, exposed to the scorching heat by day and the freezing cold by night.
- 31I will punish him, his children, and his officials for their sin. I will bring down on them, on the people of Jerusalem, and on everyone in Judah every disaster I warned them about — because they refused to listen.'"
- 32So Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, son of Neriah. As Jeremiah dictated, Baruch wrote down all the words from the scroll that King Jehoiakim of Judah had burned in the fire — and many additional messages like them were included as well.
