  1. 1These are the territories that the Israelites inherited in the land of Canaan, distributed by Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders of the tribes of Israel.
  2. 2Their inheritance was determined by casting lots, as the LORD commanded through Moses, for the nine tribes and the half tribe.
  3. 3Moses had given the inheritance to two and a half tribes on the other side of the Jordan, but he did not give any inheritance to the Levites among them.
  4. 4The descendants of Joseph formed two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. So the Levites were not given a portion of the land. They only received cities to live in, with pastures around them for their cattle and goods.
  5. 5As the LORD commanded Moses, the Israelites did, and they divided the land.
  6. 6The people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, said to him, "You know what the LORD said to Moses, the man of God, about you and me in Kadesh Barnea."
  7. 7I was 40 years old when Moses, the servant of the LORD, sent me from Kadesh Barnea to scout the land. I returned and gave him a report that was true to my heart.
  8. 8But my brothers who went with me caused the people's hearts to melt with fear. I, however, followed the LORD my God completely.
  9. 9And on that day, Moses swore an oath, saying, 'Surely the land where your feet have walked will be your inheritance and your children's forever, because you have fully followed the LORD my God.'
  10. 10Now look — the LORD has kept me alive just as he promised, all these 45 years since he spoke those words to Moses while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Here I am today, 85 years old!
  11. 11I'm just as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out. My strength for battle — for marching out and fighting — is the same now as it was then.
  12. 12So now, give me this mountain that the LORD spoke about on that day. You heard on that day how the Anakim were there, and the cities were large and fortified. If the LORD is with me, I will be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.
  13. 13Joshua blessed him and gave Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, Hebron as an inheritance.
  14. 14So Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he fully followed the LORD God of Israel.
  15. 15Hebron was previously called Kirjatharba, named after Arba, a great man among the Anakims. Then the land had rest from war.
