- 1Joshua was now very old, and the LORD said to him, "You are old and advanced in years, and there is still a lot of land left to be taken."
- 2"This is the land that still remains: all the territory of the Philistines and all the region of the Geshurites,
- 3from the Shihor River, which is before Egypt, all the way north to the border of Ekron, considered Canaanite territory. This includes the lands of the five Philistine rulers: the rulers of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron. It also includes the territory of the Avites.
- 4From the south, all the land of the Canaanites, including Mearah near the Sidonians, extending to Aphek and the borders of the Amorites.
- 5And the land of the Gebalites, and all of Lebanon to the east, from Baal Gad at the foot of Mount Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.
- 6All the people living in the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephothmaim, including all the Sidonians, I will drive out ahead of the Israelites. You are to divide the land among the Israelites by lot as their inheritance, as I have commanded you.
- 7Now, divide this land as an inheritance for the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
- 8With them, the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them beyond the Jordan to the east, as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.
- 9From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Arnon River, including the city in the middle of the river, and all the plain of Medeba up to Dibon;
- 10It included all the cities of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, extending to the border of the children of Ammon.
- 11It included Gilead, the territory of the Geshurites and Maachathites, all of Mount Hermon, and all of Bashan up to Salcah;
- 12The whole kingdom of Og in Bashan, who ruled in Ashtaroth and Edrei, was the last of the remnant of the giants. Moses struck them down and drove them out.
- 13However, the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maachathites. They still live among the Israelites to this day.
- 14The tribe of Levi was the only tribe that did not receive any land as an inheritance. Instead, their inheritance was the fire offerings made to the LORD God of Israel, as He had told them.
- 15Moses gave the tribe of Reuben their inheritance, divided according to their families.
- 16Their territory extended from Aroer, which is on the bank of the Arnon River, and the city in the middle of the river, and all the plain by Medeba.
- 17Heshbon and all its cities in the plain: Dibon, Bamothbaal, and Bethbaalmeon,
- 18Jahaza, Kedemoth, and Mephaath,
- 19Kirjathaim, Sibmah, and Zarethshahar on the hill in the valley,
- 20Bethpeor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Bethjeshimoth,
- 21all the cities of the plain and the entire kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon. Moses defeated him along with the Midianite leaders Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, who were dukes of Sihon and lived in that land.
- 22Balaam, the son of Beor and a soothsayer, was killed by the Israelites with the sword, among those they defeated.
- 23The border of the children of Reuben was the Jordan River. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, including the cities and villages.
- 24Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the children of Gad according to their families.
- 25Their territory included Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, extending to Aroer near Rabbah.
- 26It extended from Heshbon to Ramathmizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir.
- 27In the valley were Betharam, Bethnimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, which were part of the remaining kingdom of Sihon, king of Heshbon. The Jordan River marked the border, reaching to the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth on the east side of the Jordan.
- 28This is the inheritance of the tribe of Gad according to their clans, including the cities and their villages.
- 29Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh, distributed among their families.
- 30Their territory extended from Mahanaim and included all of Bashan, the entire kingdom of Og, king of Bashan, and all 60 towns of Jair in Bashan.
- 31Half of Gilead, along with Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of Og's kingdom in Bashan, were given to the descendants of Machir, son of Manasseh, specifically to half of Machir's families.
- 32These are the territories that Moses distributed for inheritance in the plains of Moab, on the east side of the Jordan, across from Jericho.
- 33But Moses did not give any inheritance to the tribe of Levi. The LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as he had promised them.
