  1. 1When all the kings of the Amorites west of the Jordan and all the kings of the Canaanites by the sea heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we crossed over, their hearts melted, and there was no more spirit in them because of the children of Israel.
  2. 2At that time the LORD said to Joshua, 'Make sharp knives and circumcise the Israelites again.'
  3. 3So Joshua made sharp knives and circumcised the Israelites at the hill of the foreskins.
  4. 4This is why Joshua circumcised them: All the males who came out of Egypt, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt.
  5. 5All the people who left Egypt had been circumcised, but none of those born during the journey in the wilderness had been circumcised.
  6. 6The Israelites wandered in the wilderness for forty years until all the men of war who had left Egypt were gone, because they did not obey the voice of the LORD. The LORD had sworn that he would not show them the land he had sworn to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
  7. 7So Joshua circumcised their children, whom God raised up in their place, because they had not been circumcised during the journey.
  8. 8After they finished circumcising all the people, they stayed in the camp until they were healed.
  9. 9Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." Therefore, the place is called Gilgal to this day.
  10. 10While camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the children of Israel observed the Passover on the evening of the fourteenth day of the month.
  11. 11The day after the Passover, they ate from the old grain of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain.
  12. 12The manna stopped the day after they ate the old grain of the land. The children of Israel never had manna again, but that year they ate the produce of the land of Canaan.
  13. 13When Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua approached him and asked, "Are you for us or for our enemies?"
  14. 14"No," he replied, "I have come as the commander of the LORD's army." Joshua fell facedown to the ground in worship and asked, "What does my lord say to his servant?"
  15. 15The captain of the LORD's army said to Joshua, "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy." And Joshua did so.
