- 1The LORD spoke to Moses and said,
- 2Speak to the children of Israel, saying, "If a woman becomes pregnant and gives birth to a male child, then she will be unclean for 7 days. According to the days of the separation for her infirmity, she will be unclean."
- 3On the 8th day, the boy must be circumcised.
- 4After that, the mother must wait another 33 days during her time of purification. She must not touch anything that is holy or enter the sanctuary until her purification period is complete.
- 5If she gives birth to a female child, then she will be unclean for 2 weeks, as in her separation. She will continue in the blood of her purifying for 66 days.
- 6When her purification period is complete — whether for a son or a daughter — she must bring a year-old lamb as a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a turtledove as a sin offering. She must bring them to the priest at the entrance of the tabernacle.
- 7The priest will present the offerings before the LORD and make atonement for her. Then she will be cleansed from her flow of blood. This is the law for any woman who gives birth, whether to a boy or a girl.
- 8If she can't afford a lamb, she may bring 2 turtledoves or 2 young pigeons instead — one for a burnt offering and one for a sin offering. The priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean."
