- 1The LORD spoke to Moses and said,
- 2Tell Aaron and his sons to separate themselves from the holy things of the Israelites, so they do not profane my holy name in the things the people set apart for me. I am the LORD.
- 3Tell them: If any of your descendants, in any generation, approaches the sacred offerings that the Israelites have set apart for the LORD while having his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be cut off from my presence. I am the LORD.
- 4Any descendant of Aaron who has a skin disease or a bodily discharge shall not eat of the holy things until he is clean. Also, anyone who touches something made unclean by a dead body, or a man who has a seminal emission,
- 5or anyone who touches a crawling creature that makes him unclean, or a person from whom he may become unclean, whatever uncleanness that person has.
- 6The soul that touches any such thing will be unclean until evening. He must not eat the holy food unless he washes his body with water.
- 7"After the sun goes down, he will be clean again, and then he may eat the sacred food, because that is his share of the provisions."
- 8"He must not eat anything that died on its own or was killed by wild animals — that would make him unclean. I am the LORD."
- 9They must therefore keep my ordinance, so that they do not bear sin for it and die because of it if they profane it. I, the LORD, sanctify them.
- 10"No outsider may eat the sacred food. This includes anyone staying temporarily with a priest and any hired worker."
- 11But if a priest buys any soul with his money, that soul may eat of it, and those born in his house may also eat of his food.
- 12"If a priest's daughter marries someone who is not a priest, she can no longer eat from the sacred offerings."
- 13"But if a priest's daughter becomes a widow or gets divorced and has no children, and she returns to live in her father's house as she did when she was young, she may eat from her father's food again. No outsider, however, may eat any of it."
- 14"If someone accidentally eats sacred food, he must pay back its value plus an additional 20 percent and give it to the priest."
- 15"The priests must not let the sacred offerings that the Israelites present to the LORD be treated as common,"
- 16"allowing people to bring guilt on themselves by eating what is holy. I am the LORD who makes these things holy."
- 17The LORD spoke to Moses and said,
- 18"Speak to Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites. Tell them: Whether someone is an Israelite or a foreigner living in Israel, whenever anyone brings an offering to the LORD — whether to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering — if it is a burnt offering,"
- 19You shall offer a male without blemish, from the cattle, sheep, or goats, according to your own will.
- 20"Do not offer any animal that has a defect, because it will not be accepted on your behalf."
- 21"When anyone brings a peace offering to the LORD — whether to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering — the animal from the herd or flock must be completely free of defects in order to be accepted."
- 22"Do not offer to the LORD any animal that is blind, injured, maimed, or that has warts, sores, or a running infection. Do not place any such animal on the altar as a fire offering to the LORD."
- 23"You may offer a bull or lamb with a stunted or oversized limb as a freewill offering, but it will not be accepted to fulfill a vow."
- 24"Do not offer to the LORD any animal whose testicles are bruised, crushed, torn, or cut. You must never do this in your land."
- 25"And you must not accept such animals from a foreigner to offer as food to your God. Because they are damaged and defective, they will not be accepted on your behalf."
- 26The LORD spoke to Moses and said,
- 27"When a calf, lamb, or young goat is born, it must stay with its mother for 7 days. From the 8th day on, it may be accepted as a fire offering to the LORD."
- 28"Whether it is a cow or a ewe, do not slaughter the mother and her young on the same day."
- 29When you offer a thanksgiving sacrifice to the LORD, do it willingly.
- 30"It must be eaten that same day — don't leave any of it until morning. I am the LORD."
- 31"Keep my commandments and follow them. I am the LORD."
- 32Do not profane my holy name. I will be hallowed among the children of Israel. I am the LORD who makes you holy,
- 33"the one who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD."
