  1. 1"Don't make idols for yourselves. Don't set up carved images, sacred pillars, or engraved stones anywhere in your land to bow down to them. I am the LORD your God.
  2. 2You shall keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary. I am the LORD.
  3. 3If you follow my statutes, keep my commandments, and carry them out,
  4. 4then I will send your rains at the right time. The land will produce its crops, and the trees in the fields will bear their fruit.
  5. 5Your harvest season will be so abundant that you'll still be threshing grain when it's time to pick grapes, and you'll still be picking grapes when it's time to plant again. You'll have all the food you need, and you'll live safely in your land.
  6. 6I will give you peace throughout the land. You'll lie down to sleep with nothing to fear. I will rid the land of dangerous animals, and no army will march through your territory.
  7. 7You will chase your enemies, and they will fall before your swords.
  8. 85 of you will chase 100, and 100 of you will put 10,000 to flight. Your enemies will fall before your swords.
  9. 9I will look on you with favor. I will make you fruitful, multiply your numbers, and keep my covenant with you.
  10. 10And you shall eat old store, and bring forth the old because of the new.
  11. 11I will place my tabernacle among you, and my soul will not reject you.
  12. 12I will walk among you. I will be your God, and you will be my people.
  13. 13I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt so you would no longer be slaves. I broke the bars of your yoke and let you walk with your heads held high.
  14. 14But if you refuse to listen to me and won't carry out all these commandments —
  15. 15if you reject my statutes, and if your soul despises my laws, so that you refuse to obey my commandments and break my covenant —
  16. 16then here is what I will do to you: I will bring terror on you, along with wasting disease and burning fever that will drain your eyes and crush your spirit. You will plant your crops for nothing, because your enemies will eat the harvest.
  17. 17I will turn my face against you, and your enemies will strike you down. Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will run in panic even when no one is chasing you.
  18. 18If after all this you still won't listen to me, I will punish you 7 times over for your sins.
  19. 19I will shatter the pride of your power. I will make your heaven as iron and your earth as bronze.
  20. 20All your hard work will be wasted, because your land won't produce crops and your trees won't bear fruit.
  21. 21If you continue to defy me and refuse to listen, I will multiply your plagues 7 times over, matching your sins.
  22. 22I will unleash wild animals among you. They will snatch your children, destroy your livestock, and reduce your numbers until your roads are empty and deserted.
  23. 23If even after all this you still won't turn back to me, but keep on defying me,
  24. 24then I myself will defy you in return. I will strike you 7 times over for your sins.
  25. 25I will bring war against you to avenge my broken covenant. When you retreat behind your city walls, I will send plague among you, and you will be handed over to your enemies.
  26. 26When I cut off your food supply, 10 women will be able to bake all your bread in a single oven. They'll ration it out by weight, and you'll eat but never have enough.
  27. 27If after all of this you still won't listen to me but keep on defying me,
  28. 28then I will defy you with furious anger. I myself will punish you 7 times over for your sins.
  29. 29You will be driven to eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters.
  30. 30I will destroy your pagan shrines, smash your incense altars, and pile your corpses on top of your broken idols. My soul will despise you.
  31. 31I will turn your cities into ruins and lay waste to your sanctuaries. I will no longer accept the pleasing aroma of your offerings.
  32. 32I will devastate the land so completely that even your enemies who settle there will be shocked by what they see.
  33. 33I will scatter you among the nations and pursue you with the sword. Your land will be left desolate, and your cities will lie in ruins.
  34. 34Then the land will enjoy its sabbaths as long as it lies desolate while you are in your enemies' land. The land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths.
  35. 35The entire time it lies desolate, the land will have the rest it never got during the Sabbaths when you lived on it.
  36. 36As for those of you who survive, I will fill your hearts with dread while you live in your enemies' lands. The rustle of a windblown leaf will send you running as if a sword were behind you, and you'll collapse even when no one is chasing you.
  37. 37You'll stumble over each other as though fleeing from battle, even when no one is pursuing you. You will have no strength to stand against your enemies.
  38. 38You will die off among the nations, swallowed up by the lands of your enemies.
  39. 39Those of you who remain will waste away in your enemies' lands because of your sins — and because of the sins of your ancestors piled on top of your own.
  40. 40But if they confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors — the unfaithfulness they committed against me and the way they defied me,
  41. 41And that I also have walked contrary to them and brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts are humbled, and they then accept the punishment of their iniquity,
  42. 42then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, my covenant with Isaac, and my covenant with Abraham. And I will remember the land.
  43. 43The land will be left behind by them and will enjoy its Sabbaths while it lies empty without them. They will accept the punishment for their sins, because they rejected my laws and their soul despised my statutes.
  44. 44Yet even so, while they are living in their enemies' land, I will not completely reject them or despise them enough to destroy them entirely and break my covenant with them. I am the LORD their God.
  45. 45For their sake, I will remember the covenant I made with their ancestors — the people I brought out of Egypt while the nations watched — so that I could be their God. I am the LORD."
  46. 46These are the statutes, laws, and regulations that the LORD established between himself and the people of Israel at Mount Sinai through Moses.
