- 1The words of Nehemiah son of Hachaliah. In the month of Chisleu, during the twentieth year, I was in the palace at Shushan.
- 2Hanani, one of my brothers, came with certain men from Judah. I asked them about the Jews who had escaped and were left of the captivity, and about Jerusalem.
- 3They told me, "The remnant left from the captivity in the province are in great affliction and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are burned with fire."
- 4When I heard this, I sat down and wept. For days I mourned, fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
- 5I said, "Please, LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God who keeps his covenant and shows mercy to those who love him and obey his commandments."
- 6Let your ear now be attentive, and your eyes open, that you may hear the prayer of your servant, which I pray before you now, day and night, for the children of Israel your servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against you: both I and my father's house have sinned.
- 7We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, or the judgments you gave to your servant Moses.
- 8Please remember what you told your servant Moses: 'If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations.
- 9But if you return to me and obey my commandments and follow them, then even if some of you have been driven to the farthest part of heaven, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen to set my name there.
- 10These are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand.
- 11LORD, please let your ear be attentive to my prayer and to the prayers of all your servants who long to fear your name. Give me success today, and let this man show me mercy." I said this because I served as the king's cupbearer.
