- 1While Israel was camped at Shittim, the men began sleeping with Moabite women.
- 2These women invited the Israelites to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate the sacrificial meals and bowed down to worship those gods.
- 3Israel devoted itself to Baal Peor, and the LORD's anger burned against them.
- 4The LORD told Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people and hang them up before the LORD in the sunlight, so that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel."
- 5So Moses told the judges of Israel, "Each of you must put to death every man under your authority who has devoted himself to Baal Peor."
- 6At that moment, an Israelite man brought a Midianite woman to his family in full view of Moses and the entire congregation of Israel, who were weeping at the entrance of the Tabernacle.
- 7When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the grandson of Aaron the priest, saw this, he jumped up from the crowd and grabbed a spear.
- 8He followed the Israelite man into the tent and drove the spear through both of them — through the man and through the woman's body. Immediately, the plague that had been striking Israel stopped.
- 9By then, 24,000 people had already died from the plague.
- 10The LORD said to Moses,
- 11"Phinehas son of Eleazar, grandson of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the Israelites. He was as jealous for my honor among them as I am, so I didn't destroy them all in my jealousy.
- 12Because of this, tell him: I am giving him my covenant of peace.
- 13He and his descendants after him will hold the covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the people of Israel."
- 14The Israelite man who was killed along with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, a leader of a prominent family in the tribe of Simeon.
- 15The Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was the leader over a people and of a chief house in Midian.
- 16Then the LORD said to Moses,
- 17"Treat the Midianites as enemies and attack them,
- 18because they treated you as enemies first. They used their schemes to deceive you — through the incident at Peor and through Cozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, who was killed on the day the plague broke out because of what happened at Peor."
