1. 1After the plague had ended, the LORD spoke to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest.
2. 2He said, "Take a census of the entire Israelite community. Count every man 20 years old and older, by their ancestral families — everyone who is able to serve in Israel's army."
3. 3So Moses and Eleazar the priest addressed the people on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan River across from Jericho.
4. 4They said, "Count every man 20 years old and older, just as the LORD commanded Moses." These are the Israelites who had come out of Egypt:
5. 5Reuben was Israel's firstborn. His descendants included: from Hanoch, the Hanochite clan; from Pallu, the Palluite clan;
6. 6from Hezron, the Hezronite clan; and from Carmi, the Carmite clan.
7. 7These were the clans of Reuben, and their total count was 43,730.
8. 8Pallu's son was Eliab.
9. 9Eliab's sons were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These were the same Dathan and Abiram — prominent members of the community — who rebelled against Moses and Aaron by joining Korah's revolt against the LORD.
10. 10The earth opened up and swallowed them along with Korah, and the rest of that group died when fire consumed 250 men. Their fate became a warning to everyone.
11. 11However, Korah's own sons did not die.
12. 12The descendants of Simeon by their clans were: from Nemuel, the Nemuelite clan; from Jamin, the Jaminite clan; from Jachin, the Jachinite clan;
13. 13from Zerah, the Zarhite clan; and from Shaul, the Shaulite clan.
14. 14These were the clans of Simeon, totaling 22,200.
15. 15The descendants of Gad by their clans were: from Zephon, the Zephonite clan; from Haggi, the Haggite clan; from Shuni, the Shunite clan;
16. 16from Ozni, the Oznite clan; from Eri, the Erite clan;
17. 17from Arod, the Arodite clan; and from Areli, the Arelite clan.
18. 18These were the clans of Gad, and their total count was 40,500.
19. 19Judah's sons included Er and Onan, but both Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan.
20. 20The sons of Judah by their families were: from Shelah, the Shelanite family; from Pharez, the Pharzite family; and from Zerah, the Zarhite family.
21. 21Pharez's descendants were: from Hezron, the Hezronite clan; and from Hamul, the Hamulite clan.
22. 22These were the clans of Judah, totaling 76,500.
23. 23The descendants of Issachar by their clans were: from Tola, the Tolaite clan; from Pua, the Punite clan;
24. 24from Jashub, the Jashubite clan; and from Shimron, the Shimronite clan.
25. 25These were the clans of Issachar, totaling 64,300.
26. 26The descendants of Zebulun by their clans were: from Sered, the Sardite clan; from Elon, the Elonite clan; and from Jahleel, the Jahleelite clan.
27. 27These were the clans of Zebulun, totaling 60,500.
28. 28The descendants of Joseph formed two tribal groups: Manasseh and Ephraim.
29. 29From Manasseh: Machir founded the Machirite clan. Machir was the father of Gilead, and from Gilead came the Gileadite clan.
30. 30Gilead's descendants were: from Jeezer, the Jeezerite clan; from Helek, the Helekite clan;
31. 31from Asriel, the Asrielite clan; from Shechem, the Shechemite clan;
32. 32from Shemida, the Shemidaite clan; and from Hepher, the Hepherite clan.
33. 33Now Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons — only daughters. Their names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
34. 34These were the clans of Manasseh, totaling 52,700.
35. 35The descendants of Ephraim by their clans were: from Shuthelah, the Shuthalhite clan; from Becher, the Bachrite clan; and from Tahan, the Tahanite clan.
36. 36Shuthelah's descendant was Eran, who founded the Eranite clan.
37. 37These were the clans of Ephraim, totaling 32,500. Together, these were the descendants of Joseph by their clans.
38. 38The descendants of Benjamin by their clans were: from Bela, the Belaite clan; from Ashbel, the Ashbelite clan; from Ahiram, the Ahiramite clan;
39. 39from Shupham, the Shuphamite clan; and from Hupham, the Huphamite clan.
40. 40Bela's sons were Ard and Naaman. From Ard came the Ardite clan, and from Naaman came the Naamite clan.
41. 41These were the clans of Benjamin, totaling 45,600.
42. 42The descendants of Dan by their clans were: from Shuham, the Shuhamite clan. These were all the clans traced back to Dan.
43. 43The total count of all the Shuhamite clans was 64,400.
44. 44The descendants of Asher by their clans were: from Jimna, the Jimnite clan; from Jesui, the Jesuite clan; and from Beriah, the Beriite clan.
45. 45From Beriah's line: Heber founded the Heberite clan, and Malchiel founded the Malchielite clan.
46. 46Asher also had a daughter named Sarah.
47. 47These were the clans of Asher, totaling 53,400.
48. 48The descendants of Naphtali by their clans were: from Jahzeel, the Jahzeelite clan; from Guni, the Gunite clan;
49. 49from Jezer, the Jezerite clan; and from Shillem, the Shillemite clan.
50. 50These were the clans of Naphtali, totaling 45,400.
51. 51The grand total of all the Israelite men counted was 601,730.
52. 52Then the LORD said to Moses,
53. 53"The land is to be divided among these people as their inheritance, based on the number of names counted."
54. 54"Give a larger portion to a larger tribe and a smaller portion to a smaller tribe. Each tribe's inheritance should match the size of its population."
55. 55"However, the land must be distributed by casting lots. Each tribe will receive its territory under the name of its ancestral tribe."
56. 56"The lot will determine where each inheritance falls, whether the tribe is large or small."
57. 57The Levites were counted separately by their clans: from Gershon, the Gershonite clan; from Kohath, the Kohathite clan; and from Merari, the Merarite clan.
58. 58The Levite clans also included the Libnites, the Hebronites, the Mahlites, the Mushites, and the Korathites. Kohath was the father of Amram.
59. 59Amram's wife was Jochebed, a daughter of Levi who was born to him in Egypt. She bore Amram three children: Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
60. 60Aaron's sons were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
61. 61But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered strange fire before the LORD.
62. 62The total count of Levite males one month old and older was 23,000. They were not included in the main census of Israel because they received no land inheritance among the Israelites.
63. 63These are the results of the census taken by Moses and Eleazar the priest on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan River across from Jericho.
64. 64Not a single person from this census had been counted in the earlier census that Moses and Aaron conducted in the wilderness of Sinai.
65. 65The LORD had declared that the earlier generation would die in the wilderness, and every one of them had — except for Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
