- 1This is the vision of Obadiah. The Lord GOD says this about Edom: We have heard a report from the LORD, and a messenger has been sent among the nations, saying, 'Rise up, and let us rise against her in battle.'
- 2Look, I have made you small among the nations; you are greatly despised.
- 3The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, whose dwelling is high; you say in your heart, 'Who can bring me down to the ground?'
- 4Even if you exalt yourself like the eagle and set your nest among the stars, I will bring you down from there," says the LORD.
- 5If thieves came to you, if robbers by night—how you are cut off!—wouldn't they have stolen until they had enough? If grape gatherers came to you, wouldn't they leave some grapes?
- 6How thoroughly Esau's things are searched out! How his hidden things are uncovered!
- 7All the men of your alliance have driven you to the border; the men who were at peace with you have deceived you and overpowered you; those who eat your bread have set a trap beneath you—there is no understanding in him.
- 8Shall I not on that day, says the LORD, destroy the wise men from Edom and understanding from the mountain of Esau?
- 9Your mighty men, Teman, will be dismayed, so that everyone on the mountain of Esau will be cut off by slaughter.
- 10Because of your violence against your brother Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be cut off forever.
- 11On the day you stood on the other side, on the day that strangers carried away his forces captive, and foreigners entered his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even you were as one of them.
- 12But you should not have looked on the day of your brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; nor should you have spoken proudly in the day of their distress.
- 13You should not have entered the gate of my people on the day of their calamity. You should not have looked on their affliction on the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their possessions on the day of their calamity.
- 14You should not have stood at the crossroads to cut off those of his who were escaping. You should not have handed over those of his who remained on the day of distress.
- 15For the day of the LORD is near for all the heathen: as you have done, it will be done to you; your reward will return upon your own head.
- 16Just as you drank on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. Yes, they will drink and gulp it down, and they will be as if they had never existed.
- 17But on Mount Zion there will be deliverance, and there will be holiness; and the house of Jacob will possess their possessions.
- 18The house of Jacob will be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau will be stubble. They will ignite them and consume them; there will be no one left from the house of Esau. The LORD has spoken.
- 19Those from the south will possess the mountain of Esau, and those from the plain will possess the land of the Philistines. They will possess the fields of Ephraim and the fields of Samaria, and Benjamin will possess Gilead.
- 20The captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even as far as Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.
- 21And saviours shall come up on Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau, and the kingdom shall belong to the LORD.
