  1. 1From Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, along with the bishops and deacons:
  2. 2May grace and peace be yours from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
  3. 3Every time I think of you, I thank my God.
  4. 4Whenever I pray for any of you, I do it with joy,
  5. 5because of your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;
  6. 6I am confident of this very thing, that God, who began a good work in you, will carry it on until the day of Jesus Christ.
  7. 7It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because I have you in my heart. Whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, you all share in my grace.
  8. 8God is my witness — I long for every one of you with the deep affection of Christ Jesus himself.
  9. 9And this is my prayer: that your love may grow more and more in knowledge and in all judgment,
  10. 10so that you may approve what is excellent and be sincere and without offense until the day of Christ;
  11. 11Being filled with the fruits of righteousness that come through Jesus Christ, bringing glory and praise to God.
  12. 12But I want you to understand, brothers and sisters, that the things which happened to me have actually helped the gospel move forward.
  13. 13The entire palace guard — and everyone else around — now knows that I'm in chains because of Christ.
  14. 14Moreover, many of the brothers and sisters in the Lord have grown more confident because of my imprisonment and are much bolder to speak the word without fear.
  15. 15It's true that some preach Christ out of jealousy and rivalry, but others do it with genuine goodwill.
  16. 16The one preaches Christ out of contention, not sincerely, thinking to add affliction to my chains.
  17. 17But the others preach out of love, knowing that I am appointed to defend the gospel.
  18. 18What does it matter? In any case, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. This makes me rejoice, and I will continue to rejoice.
  19. 19I know that through your prayers and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, all of this will lead to my salvation.
  20. 20My deep hope and expectation is that I won't be put to shame in any way. Instead, with complete boldness — just as always — Christ will be honored through my body, whether I live or whether I die.
  21. 21For me, living means Christ, and dying is gain.
  22. 22But if I go on living in this body, that means fruitful work for me. Honestly, I don't know which I would choose.
  23. 23I'm torn between the two. Part of me longs to leave this life and be with Christ, which would be far better.
  24. 24But staying alive in this body is more necessary for your sake.
  25. 25Since I'm convinced of this, I know I'll remain and continue with all of you, helping you grow and find joy in your faith.
  26. 26That way, when I come to you again, you'll have even more reason to rejoice in Christ Jesus because of me.
  27. 27Above all, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or hear about you from afar, I will know that you are standing firm in one spirit, working together with one mind for the faith of the gospel.
  28. 28Don't be intimidated in any way by those who oppose you. Your courage is a clear sign to them that they're headed for destruction — but for you, it's a sign of salvation, and that comes from God.
  29. 29For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for his sake;
  30. 30You're going through the same struggle you once watched me face — and that you hear I'm still facing now.
