- 1If there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any fellowship with the Spirit, any deep affection and mercy,
- 2then make my joy complete by being united in thought, sharing the same love, and living in harmony with one mind and one purpose.
- 3Don't do anything out of selfish ambition or empty pride. Instead, be humble, and consider others as more important than yourselves.
- 4Don't just look out for your own interests — pay attention to the interests of others too.
- 5Have the same mindset that was in Christ Jesus:
- 6Who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God:
- 7Instead, he made himself nothing, took on the form of a servant, and was made in human likeness.
- 8Appearing as an ordinary man, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death — even death on a cross.
- 9Therefore, God has highly exalted him and given him a name that is above every name,
- 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow — in heaven, on earth, and under the earth —
- 11and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
- 12So then, my dear friends, just as you've always obeyed — not only when I was with you, but even more now that I'm away — keep working out your salvation with fear and trembling.
- 13Because it is God who is at work inside you, giving you both the desire and the power to do what pleases him.
- 14Do all things without complaining or arguing,
- 15so that you may be blameless and innocent, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the middle of a crooked and perverse nation. Among them, you shine as lights in the world,
- 16holding out the word of life, so that on the day of Christ I may rejoice that I have not run in vain or worked in vain.
- 17Even if my life is poured out like a drink offering on top of the sacrifice and service that your faith offers to God, I'm glad — and I share that joy with all of you.
- 18In the same way, you should be glad too, and share your joy with me.
- 19I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I can be encouraged when I hear how you're doing.
- 20I don't have anyone else like him — someone who genuinely cares about your well-being.
- 21Everyone else is focused on their own interests, not the things that matter to Jesus Christ.
- 22But you already know Timothy's proven character. Like a son working alongside his father, he has served with me in spreading the gospel.
- 23So I hope to send him as soon as I see how things turn out for me.
- 24And I'm confident in the Lord that I myself will come to you soon as well.
- 25I thought it necessary to send Epaphroditus to you—my brother, coworker, fellow soldier, and your messenger who took care of my needs.
- 26He's been longing to see all of you and has been deeply distressed because you heard he was sick.
- 27He really was sick — so sick he nearly died. But God had mercy on him, and not just on him but on me too, so I wouldn't have to bear one grief on top of another.
- 28That's why I'm all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you'll be filled with joy, and my own worry will be eased.
- 29Welcome him in the Lord with all gladness, and hold people like him in high regard.
- 30He nearly died doing the work of Christ, risking his own life to make up for the help you couldn't give me in person.
