- 1My son, if you have guaranteed a loan for your friend, if you have shaken hands with a stranger,
- 2You are trapped by the words of your mouth, you are caught by the words of your mouth.
- 3Do this now, my son, and free yourself when you have come into your friend's power; go, humble yourself, and make sure of your friend.
- 4Do not give sleep to your eyes, or slumber to your eyelids.
- 5Free yourself like a deer from the hand of the hunter, and like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
- 6Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider her ways and become wise:
- 7which has no guide, overseer, or ruler,
- 8Provides her food in the summer and gathers her food at harvest.
- 9How long will you sleep, O sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?
- 10A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest:
- 11So your poverty will come like a traveler, and your need like an armed man.
- 12A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a crooked mouth.
- 13He winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, and gestures with his fingers;
- 14Perverseness is in his heart; he continually plans mischief and spreads discord.
- 15Therefore his calamity will come suddenly; suddenly he will be broken without remedy.
- 16These six things the LORD hates; yes, seven are an abomination to him:
- 17a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
- 18a heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to mischief,
- 19a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.
- 20My son, keep your father's commandment, and do not abandon your mother's teaching:
- 21Bind them continually upon your heart, and tie them around your neck.
- 22When you go, it will guide you; when you sleep, it will watch over you; and when you wake up, it will speak with you.
- 23For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
- 24to protect you from the evil woman, from the smooth talk of a foreign woman.
- 25Do not lust after her beauty in your heart; neither let her take you with her eyelids.
- 26For by means of a promiscuous woman, a man is reduced to a piece of bread, and the adulteress hunts for the precious life.
- 27Can a man hold fire against his chest and not have his clothes burned?
- 28Can someone walk on hot coals without their feet being burned?
- 29So it is with anyone who goes to his neighbor's wife; whoever touches her will not be innocent.
- 30People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
- 31But if he is found, he must repay seven times; he must give all the wealth of his house.
- 32But whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; he who does it destroys his own soul.
- 33He will receive a wound and dishonor, and his disgrace will not be erased.
- 34For jealousy makes a man furious, so he will not hold back on the day of revenge.
- 35He will not accept any ransom; nor will he be satisfied, even if you offer many gifts.
