  1. 1After this, I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had tremendous authority, and the whole earth was lit up by his glory.
  2. 2He shouted with a powerful voice: "Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a home for demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and detestable bird!"
  3. 3For all nations have drunk the wine of the wrath of her immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the abundance of her luxuries.
  4. 4Then I heard another voice from heaven say, "Come out of her, my people! Don't participate in her sins, or you will share in her plagues."
  5. 5For her sins have reached up to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.
  6. 6"Pay her back the way she paid others. Give her double for everything she has done. Fill her cup twice as full as she filled it for others."
  7. 7"Match her torment and grief to the glory and luxury she gave herself. She tells herself, 'I sit as a queen. I'm no widow. I will never know sorrow.'"
  8. 8"Because of this, her plagues will strike in a single day — death, mourning, and famine — and she will be completely consumed by fire. For the Lord God who judges her is mighty."
  9. 9The kings of the earth who have committed immorality and lived in luxury with her will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning.
  10. 10They will stand far away, terrified by her torment, and cry out, "How terrible! How terrible for you, great city of Babylon, you mighty city! In a single hour your judgment has come!"
  11. 11The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their goods anymore —
  12. 12their cargo of gold, silver, precious stones, and pearls; fine linen, purple cloth, silk, and scarlet fabric; every kind of expensive wood; all sorts of ivory objects; every item crafted from the finest wood, bronze, iron, and marble;
  13. 13cinnamon, incense, perfume, and frankincense; wine, olive oil, fine flour, and wheat; cattle, sheep, horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.
  14. 14The fruits that your soul desired have left you, and all the luxurious and splendid things have disappeared, never to be found again.
  15. 15The merchants who got rich from her will stand far away, terrified by her torment, weeping and mourning.
  16. 16They will cry out, "How terrible! How terrible for the great city that was dressed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and glittering with gold, precious stones, and pearls!"
  17. 17In a single hour, all that wealth has been wiped out. Every shipmaster, all who travel in ships, sailors, and everyone who makes a living from the sea stood far away.
  18. 18They cried out as they watched the smoke of her burning: "What city was ever like this great city?"
  19. 19They threw dust on their heads and wept and mourned, crying out, "How terrible! How terrible for the great city! Everyone who had ships on the sea grew rich from her wealth — and in a single hour she has been destroyed!"
  20. 20Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets, for God has avenged you on her.
  21. 21Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a great millstone and hurled it into the sea, saying, "Just like this, the great city of Babylon will be violently thrown down and never be seen again."
  22. 22"The sound of harpists, musicians, flute players, and trumpeters will never be heard in you again. No craftsman of any trade will ever be found in you again. The grinding of a millstone will never be heard in you again."
  23. 23The glow of a lamp will never shine in you again. The voices of a bridegroom and bride will never be heard in you again. Your merchants were the great men of the earth, and your sorcery deceived all nations.
  24. 24In her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who were slain on the earth.
