  1. 1The 5th angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to the earth. This star was given the key to the bottomless pit.
  2. 2He opened the bottomless pit, and smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a massive furnace. The sun and the sky went dark because of the smoke pouring out of the pit.
  3. 3Out of the smoke came locusts that swarmed across the earth, and they were given power like the stinging power of scorpions.
  4. 4They were told not to harm the grass, any green plant, or any tree — only the people who didn't have God's seal on their foreheads.
  5. 5The locusts weren't allowed to kill these people, but they could torment them for 5 months. Their torment was like the sting of a scorpion when it strikes a person.
  6. 6During those days, people will seek death but won't find it. They'll long to die, but death will escape them.
  7. 7The locusts looked like horses armored for battle. On their heads sat something like golden crowns, and their faces resembled human faces.
  8. 8They had hair like a woman's hair, and their teeth were like a lion's fangs.
  9. 9They wore breastplates that looked like iron armor, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses charging into battle.
  10. 10They had tails like scorpions, with stingers in their tails, and their power was to hurt men for five months.
  11. 11Their king was the angel of the bottomless pit. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon.
  12. 12One woe is past; and look, there come two more woes after this.
  13. 13The 6th angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the 4 horns of the golden altar that stands before God.
  14. 14The voice said to the 6th angel who held the trumpet, "Release the 4 angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates!"
  15. 15So the 4 angels were released — they had been held ready for this exact hour, day, month, and year — to kill a third of all humanity.
  16. 16The mounted army numbered 200 million. I heard the count announced.
  17. 17In my vision, I saw the horses and their riders. The riders wore breastplates of fire, jacinth, and brimstone. The horses' heads looked like lions' heads, and fire, smoke, and brimstone came from their mouths.
  18. 18A third of humanity was killed by these three plagues: the fire, the smoke, and the brimstone that came out of their mouths.
  19. 19The horses' deadly power was in both their mouths and their tails. Their tails were like serpents with heads, and they used them to inflict harm.
  20. 20And the rest of the men who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, and silver, and bronze, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
  21. 21Nor did they repent of their murders, their sorceries, their fornication, or their thefts.
