- 1Ask the LORD for rain in the time of the latter rain; the LORD will make bright clouds and give showers of rain, so that there is grass in the field for everyone.
- 2For the idols have spoken nonsense, and the diviners have seen lies and told false dreams; they offer empty comfort. Therefore, they went their way like a flock, troubled because there was no shepherd.
- 3My anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goats, for the LORD of hosts has visited his flock, the house of Judah, and has made them like his splendid horse in battle.
- 4Out of him came the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together.
- 5Together they will be like mighty warriors, trampling their enemies into the mud of the streets. They will fight because the LORD is with them, and the riders on horses will be confounded.
- 6I will make the house of Judah strong, and I will save the house of Joseph. I will bring them back to their place because I have mercy on them. It will be as if I had never rejected them, for I am the LORD their God, and I will hear them.
- 7The people of Ephraim will be like mighty warriors, and their hearts will be as joyful as if they'd been drinking wine. Their children will see it and be glad; their hearts will rejoice in the LORD.
- 8I will hiss for them and gather them, for I have redeemed them. They will increase as they have increased.
- 9I will sow them among the people, and they will remember me in distant lands. They will live with their children and return.
- 10I will bring them back from Egypt and gather them from Assyria. I will settle them in the land of Gilead and Lebanon, and there won't be enough room for all of them.
- 11He will pass through the sea with affliction and strike the waves in the sea. All the depths of the river will dry up. The pride of Assyria will be brought down, and the scepter of Egypt will depart.
- 12I will make them strong in the LORD, and they will move about in his name," declares the LORD.
