- 1Throw open your doors, Lebanon, and let fire consume your cedars!
- 2Howl, fir tree, for the cedar has fallen; the mighty are destroyed. Wail, you oaks of Bashan, for the forest of the vintage has come down.
- 3There is the sound of shepherds wailing because their glory is ruined, and the sound of young lions roaring because the pride of Jordan is ruined.
- 4This is what the LORD my God said: 'Tend the flock destined for slaughter.'
- 5Their buyers kill them and feel no guilt. Those who sell them say, 'Blessed be the LORD, I'm getting rich!' Their own shepherds do not pity them.
- 6"For I will no longer pity the inhabitants of the land," declares the LORD. "Instead, I will deliver everyone into the hands of their neighbors and their king. They will strike the land, and I will not rescue them from their hands."
- 7So I tended the flock meant for slaughter, especially you, O poor of the flock. I took two staffs for myself: one I named Beauty, and the other I named Bands. Then I tended the flock.
- 8In one month, I cut off three shepherds; my soul loathed them, and their soul also abhorred me.
- 9Then I said, “I will not feed you. That which dies, let it die; and that which is to be cut off, let it be cut off; and let the rest eat each one the flesh of another.”
- 10I took my staff called Beauty and snapped it in two, breaking the covenant I had made with all the peoples.
- 11And it was broken in that day, and so the poor of the flock that waited on me knew that it was the word of the LORD.
- 12I said to them, "If you think it's good, give me my price; if not, refrain." So they weighed out my price—thirty pieces of silver.
- 13The LORD said to me, "Throw it to the potter—a fine price at which they valued me!" So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of the LORD.
- 14Then I snapped my other staff, Bands, in two, breaking the bond of brotherhood between Judah and Israel.
- 15The LORD said to me, 'Now take up the equipment of a foolish shepherd.'
- 16For I am about to raise up a shepherd in the land who will not care for those who are cut off, will not seek the young one, will not heal the injured, or feed those who stand still. Instead, he will eat the flesh of the fat and tear their claws apart.
- 17Woe to the idol shepherd who leaves the flock! A sword will strike his arm and his right eye. His arm will completely wither, and his right eye will be totally darkened.
