God Provides a Ram

The Test on Moriah · The land of Moriah

Genesis 22:9–19

9When they arrived at the place God had directed him to, Abraham constructed an altar and arranged the wood on it. Then he tied up his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10Abraham reached out his hand and picked up the knife to kill his son. 11But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" He answered, "Here I am." 12The angel said, "Do not lay your hand on the boy, and do not do anything to harm him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not held back your son, your only son, from me." 13Abraham looked up and noticed a ram behind him, its horns tangled in a thicket. He went over, took the ram, and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son. 14Abraham named that place Jehovahjireh. To this day people say, "On the mount of the LORD it shall be seen." 15The angel of the LORD called out to Abraham from heaven a second time 16and said, "I have sworn by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not held back your son, your only son, 17I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your seed like the stars of the heaven and the sand on the seashore. Your seed will possess the gate of his enemies. 18Through your descendants, all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice." 19Then Abraham went back to his servants, and together they traveled to Beersheba. Abraham settled in Beersheba.

About this event

What happened?

At the place God had shown him, Abraham built an altar, laid the wood on it, bound Isaac and laid him on the altar. He reached out and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham,” and told him not to lay a hand on the boy: “Now I know that thou fearest God.” Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket, and he offered it in place of his son. He named the place “The LORD will provide.” The angel called again and said that because Abraham had not held back his only son, God would bless him and multiply his offspring, and through his offspring all the nations of the earth would be blessed.

Who is here?
