Abraham's Story · Event 19 of 23
The Journey to Moriah
The Test on Moriah · The land of Moriah
Genesis 22:1–8
1Some time later, God tested Abraham. He called out to him, "Abraham!" Abraham replied, "Here I am." 2God said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, the one you love, and travel to the land of Moriah. There, sacrifice him as a burnt offering on a mountain that I will show you." 3Abraham got up early the next morning, prepared his donkey, and brought along two of his servants and his son Isaac. He chopped wood for the burnt offering, then set out for the place God had directed him to. 4On the third day, Abraham looked up and spotted the place in the distance. 5Abraham told his servants, "Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will return to you." 6Abraham placed the wood for the burnt offering on his son Isaac's back. He himself carried the fire and the knife, and the two of them walked on together. 7Isaac spoke up to his father Abraham, "Father?" Abraham answered, "Yes, my son?" Isaac asked, "I see the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" 8Abraham replied, "My son, God will provide himself a lamb for the burnt offering." The two of them continued walking together.
