In the Garden · The garden of Eden

Genesis 2:8–17

8The LORD God planted a garden in the east, in Eden, and there he put the man he had formed. 9Out of the ground, the LORD God grew every kind of tree — beautiful to look at and good for food. In the middle of the garden stood the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it split into four rivers. 11The first river was named Pishon, and it flowed around the land of Havilah, where gold is found. 12The gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are also found there. 13The second river was named Gihon, and it flowed around the land of Cush. 14The third river was named Tigris, and it flowed east of Assyria. The fourth river was the Euphrates. 15The LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to care for it and maintain it. 16The LORD God gave the man this instruction: "You may freely eat from any tree in the garden, 17but do not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. For on the day you eat from it, you will surely die.

God put the man in the garden to work it and take care of it.
