David's Story · Event 32 of 44
Kindness to Mephibosheth
King in Jerusalem · Jerusalem
2 Samuel 9:1–13
1David asked, "Is there anyone still alive from Saul's family, so I can show them kindness for Jonathan's sake?" 2Now there was a servant from Saul's household named Ziba. When they brought him before David, the king asked, "Are you Ziba?" He replied, "I am, your servant." 3The king asked, "Is there anyone left from Saul's family that I can show God's kindness to?" Ziba answered, "Jonathan still has a son. He's crippled in both feet." 4"Where is he?" the king asked. Ziba told him, "He's living in the house of Machir son of Ammiel, in Lodebar." 5So King David sent for him and had him brought from Machir son of Ammiel's house in Lodebar. 6When Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he fell on his face and did reverence. David said, "Mephibosheth." He answered, "Look, your servant!" 7David told him, "Don't be afraid. I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you will eat at my table continually." 8Mephibosheth bowed down and said, "What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?" 9Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul's servant, and told him, 'I have given your master's son everything that belonged to Saul and his entire family.' 10"You, your sons, and your servants will farm the land for him and bring in the harvest so his household will have food. But Mephibosheth himself will always eat at my table." Ziba had 15 sons and 20 servants. 11Ziba said to the king, "Your servant will do everything my lord the king commands." The king also said, "As for Mephibosheth, he shall eat at my table as one of the king's sons." 12Mephibosheth had a young son named Micha. Everyone who lived in Ziba's household served Mephibosheth. 13From then on, Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, eating regularly at the king's table. He was crippled in both feet.
