Mark 9:14–29
14When they returned to the other disciples, they found a large crowd gathered around them, with scribes arguing with them. 15Immediately, when all the people saw him, they were greatly amazed and ran to greet him. 16He asked the scribes, "What are you arguing with them about?" 17A man in the crowd spoke up and said, "Teacher, I brought my son to you, who has a spirit that makes him unable to speak." 18“Wherever it seizes him, it tears him. He foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and wastes away. I spoke to your disciples that they should cast him out, and they could not.” 19Jesus responded, "You faithless generation! How long must I stay with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me." 20So they brought the boy to Jesus. When the spirit saw him, it immediately caused the boy to convulse. He fell to the ground, rolling around and foaming at the mouth. 21Jesus asked the father, "How long has this been happening to him?" The father answered, "Since he was a small child." 22"It has thrown him into fire and into water over and over, trying to kill him. But if you can do anything at all, please have compassion on us and help us." 23Jesus said to him, "'If you can'? Everything is possible for the one who believes." 24Immediately, the boy's father cried out with tears, 'Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!' 25When Jesus saw that the people were running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying, "You deaf and mute spirit, I charge you, come out of him and never enter him again!" 26The spirit screamed, threw the boy into terrible convulsions, and came out. The boy lay there motionless, looking so lifeless that most of the people said, "He's dead." 27But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and the boy stood on his feet. 28Later, when Jesus had gone inside a house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?" 29He told them, "This kind can only be driven out through prayer and fasting."
