Luke 10:25–37
25Look, a certain expert in the law stood up and tested him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26Jesus said to him, "What does the law say? How do you read it?" 27The man answered, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind' — and 'love your neighbor as yourself.'" 28"That's the right answer," Jesus told him. "Do this, and you will live." 29But the man wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who exactly is my neighbor?" 30Jesus answered with a story: "A man was traveling the road from Jerusalem down to Jericho when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him, beat him, and left him lying there half dead. 31A priest happened to be going down that same road. When he saw the man, he crossed to the other side and kept walking. 32A Levite came along too. He walked over, looked at the man, and then crossed to the other side and kept going. 33Then a Samaritan came traveling down the road. When he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34He went to him, bandaged his wounds, poured oil and wine on them, lifted the man onto his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35The next morning before he left, he gave the innkeeper 2 denarii and said, 'Take care of him. If you spend more than this, I'll pay you back when I return.' 36Now which of these 3 men do you think was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by robbers?" 37The expert in the law replied, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do the same."
