What Makes a Person Unclean

¹⁴Jesus called the whole crowd over and said, "Listen to me, all of you, and make sure you understand this: ¹⁵Nothing that enters a person from the outside can make them unclean. It's what comes out of a person that makes them unclean." ¹⁶"If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!" ¹⁷After he left the crowd and went inside a house, his disciples asked him what the parable meant. ¹⁸He said to them, "Do you still not get it? Don't you realize that nothing going into a person from the outside can make them unclean? ¹⁹It doesn't enter the heart but goes into the stomach and then out into the latrine, purging all foods. ²⁰He continued, "It's what comes out of a person that makes them unclean. ²¹From within, out of a person's heart, come evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²²thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lustful behavior, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. ²³All these evil things come from within, and they are what make a person unclean."
