13Jesus went up on a mountainside and called the ones he wanted, and they came to him. 14He appointed twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them out to preach. 15And to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons. 16He gave Simon the name Peter; 17James son of Zebedee and his brother John — Jesus nicknamed them Boanerges, which means "Sons of Thunder"; 18Andrew; Philip; Bartholomew; Matthew; Thomas; James son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus; Simon the Canaanite; 19and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. Then they went into a house.

What happened?

Jesus went up on a mountain, and Luke says he spent the whole night praying to God. Then he chose twelve of his disciples and called them apostles. They were to be with him, and he would send them out to preach. They were Simon Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, Thaddaeus, and Judas Iscariot, who later betrayed him.

Matthew and Mark name Thaddaeus. In the same place Luke names a Judas who is not Judas Iscariot (Luke 6:16).
