Calling Matthew

⁹As Jesus moved on from there, he noticed a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collection booth. Jesus said to him, "Follow me." Matthew got up and followed him. ¹⁰Later, while Jesus was eating in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and joined him and his disciples at the table. ¹¹When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" ¹²Jesus overheard them and replied, "Healthy people don't need a doctor — sick people do. ¹³Go and figure out what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' I didn't come to call the righteous. I came to call sinners to repentance."
