At the Feast of Tabernacles

¹⁰But after his brothers had gone up to the festival, he also went up — not openly, but in secret. ¹¹The Jews were looking for him at the festival, asking, "Where is he?" ¹²There was much murmuring about him among the crowds. Some said, "He is a good man." Others said, "No, he is deceiving the people." ¹³Yet no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jews. ¹⁴About the middle of the festival, Jesus went up to the temple and began teaching. ¹⁵The Jews were amazed, saying, "How does this man know the Scriptures without having been formally taught?" ¹⁶Jesus answered them, "My teaching is not my own — it comes from the one who sent me." ¹⁷"If anyone is willing to do his will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own." ¹⁸"The one who speaks on his own seeks his own glory, but the one who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him." ¹⁹"Didn't Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?" ²⁰The crowd answered, "You have a demon! Who is trying to kill you?" ²¹Jesus answered them, "I did one work, and you all marvel at it." ²²"Moses gave you circumcision — not that it originated with Moses, but with the fathers — and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath." ²³"If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses won't be broken, are you angry at me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?" ²⁴"Do not judge by appearances, but judge with righteous judgment." ²⁵Then some of the people of Jerusalem said, "Isn't this the man they're trying to kill?" ²⁶"Look, he's speaking openly, and they say nothing to him. Could the rulers actually know that this is the Christ?" ²⁷"But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from." ²⁸Then Jesus cried out as he taught in the temple, "You both know me and know where I am from. I have not come on my own, but the one who sent me is true, and you do not know him." ²⁹"But I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me." ³⁰Then they tried to seize him, but no one laid hands on him because his hour had not yet come. ³¹Many in the crowd believed in him and said, "When the Christ comes, will he do more signs than this man has done?" ³²The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. ³³Then Jesus said, "I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the one who sent me." ³⁴"You will look for me and will not find me, and where I am, you cannot come." ³⁵The Jews said among themselves, "Where does he intend to go that we won't find him? Will he go to the Jews scattered among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?" ³⁶"What does he mean by saying, 'You will look for me and will not find me,' and 'Where I am, you cannot come'?" ³⁷On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink." ³⁸"Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within him." ³⁹(He said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him would receive. For the Holy Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.) ⁴⁰When many of the people heard these words, they said, "This truly is the Prophet." ⁴¹Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Can the Christ come from Galilee?" ⁴²"Hasn't the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David and from Bethlehem, the town where David was?" ⁴³So there was a division among the people because of him. ⁴⁴Some of them wanted to seize him, but no one laid hands on him. ⁴⁵Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why didn't you bring him?" ⁴⁶The officers answered, "No one ever spoke like this man." ⁴⁷The Pharisees answered them, "Have you been deceived too?" ⁴⁸"Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in him?" ⁴⁹"But this crowd that does not know the law — they are cursed." ⁵⁰Nicodemus, who had come to Jesus earlier and was one of them, said to them, ⁵¹"Does our law judge a man without first hearing from him and knowing what he has done?" ⁵²They answered him, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and see — no prophet arises from Galilee."
