Mark 5:21–43
21After Jesus crossed back to the other side by boat, a huge crowd gathered around him along the shore. 22A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23He pleaded desperately, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and place your hands on her so she'll be healed and live." 24Jesus went with him, and a massive crowd followed, pressing in on him from every side. 25In the crowd was a woman who had been suffering from bleeding for 12 years. 26She had endured painful treatments from doctor after doctor and had spent every penny she had, but nothing helped. In fact, she only got worse. 27She had heard about Jesus, so she pushed through the crowd behind him and touched his clothes. 28She had told herself, "If I can just touch his clothes, I'll be healed." 29Immediately the source of her bleeding dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. 30At that same moment, Jesus sensed within himself that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" 31His disciples said, "You see this crowd crushing against you from every direction, and you're asking, 'Who touched me?'" 32But Jesus kept looking around to see the woman who had done this. 33The woman, shaking with fear and knowing what had happened to her, came forward, fell at his feet, and told him the whole truth. 34Jesus said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you whole. Go in peace, and be whole from your plague." 35While Jesus was still speaking, some people arrived from Jairus's house with the news: "Your daughter is dead. There's no reason to bother the Teacher anymore." 36But Jesus overheard what they said and immediately told Jairus, "Don't be afraid. Just believe." 37He didn't let anyone come with him except Peter, James, and James's brother John. 38When they arrived at Jairus's house, Jesus found chaos — people weeping and wailing loudly. 39He went inside and said to them, "Why all this commotion and crying? The child isn't dead — she's sleeping." 40They laughed at him. But he sent them all outside, then took the girl's father and mother and those with him into the room where the child was lying. 41He took the girl by the hand and said, "Talitha cumi!" — which means, "Little girl, I'm telling you, get up!" 42Immediately the girl stood up and began walking around. She was 12 years old. Everyone there was completely astonished. 43Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone about this, and then told them to give her something to eat.
